BOX SCORE
SAN DIEGO - The Sea Lions thought they should give fans a thrill on Monday afternoon in the Golden Gymnasium, where they let their first half double-digit lead slip away to William Jewell in the last minutes of the game. Point Loma hung on though to defeat the Cardinals 46-43.
In their lowest scoring game of the year, it's ironic that Loma was not on the losing side. William Jewell shot just 25 percent from the field, however, the Sea Lions also recorded a very low 35 percent. To put it into perspective, PLNU made 17 of its attempted 48 shots and WJC was 13-51.
That ten percent shooting margin was enough to keep the Sea Lions way ahead of the Cardinals at the half, as the teams left the court with a 14-point gap, 25-11.
When Point Loma turned over the ball four times in a row in the second half, the Cardinals were able to gain momentum and finally get within ten points of the home team. With four minutes left to play, the score was tied at 38-all thanks to the on-point shooting of William Jewell's Cassy Nicolay.
With two minutes left to play, the Missouri team had taken the lead, 43-42. A good jumper from Crawford, a crucial steal by Rhoads, and an even more critical offensive rebound and shot from Campbell allowed the Sea Lions to tighten their grip and snag the 46-43 victory.
Campbell was huge for Point Loma, with 16 rebounds, half offensive, half defensive, and six blocks. Brittany Stanley and Lindsey Hill pulled down a combined 11 rebounds to add to the team's 37. The Cardinal's had just one fewer board, with 36. Crissa Jackson recorded 11 points and 6 assists, while Callie Rhoads put up ten points and Renee Crawford added nine.
Though William Jewell went to the free throw line eight more times than Loma and had fewer turnovers, they were still unable to overcome the Sea Lions' shooting. The Cardinal's Nicolay scored 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds, while Katie Bond had a double-double with ten points and 12 rebounds.
PLNU is now 5-4 while WJ drops to 7-5.
The Sea Lions' next matchup will be with Bethany Lutheran College in the first game of the three-day Surf N Slam tournament at PLNU on Monday, Dec 27 at 7:00 pm.
