Loma Overcome by Warhawk Run

UW-Whitewater uses 22-0 run to post win in Surf N Slam Classic

BOX SCORE

SAN DIEGO - The Sea Lions led by 15 points midway in the first half of Tuesday's non-conference tilt with UW-Whitewater, but the visiting Warhawks finished the half on a 20-0 run to erase the deficit. UW-W would end up scoring 22 unanswered points, holding PLNU scoreless for nearly ten minutes, en route to a 70-55 win.

It was the second game for Point Loma at the Surf N Slam Small College Basketball Tournament held in Golden Gym. The team's next contest is Thursday - most likely at 4:00 pm.

Things began great for the Sea Lions (6-5). The Green and Gold were firing on all cylinders early, and with just six and a half minutes off the clock led by 13 points. Whitewater meanwhile, which had not played in 14 days, looked rusty.

The two teams began trading points for the next few minutes and PLNU opened up their advantage to 15 with 8:37 remaining in the first half after a bucket by Crissa Jackson. Those would be the Sea Lion's last points of the opening stanza, however.

The Warhawks began an extended run from that time on. After 16 consecutive points UWW passed PLNU at 31-30. Six more points had the Warhawks ahead 35-30 at intermission.

Point Loma's Callie Rhoads scored the team's first points in nine and a half minutes with a layup two minutes into the second half. Her three pulled the Sea Lions to within three of UWW at 16:42.

That was as close as PLNU would get. The Warhawks posted another run – this one 13-0 – to open a 15-point gap. The visitor's lead would reach 20 and be 15 at the final buzzer.

The Sea Lions shot 34.9 percent while UWW shot 47.4 percent. The Warhawks also controlled the boards, 70-55.

Jackson paced PLNU with 13 points and five assists. Rhoads scored 12 with Brianna Colon and Lindsey Hill contributing 12 and 11 points respectively. Hill had a team-high seven rebounds.

Dana Thompson led the UWW charge, finishing with 24 points and 11 boards. Cortney Kumerow added 10 points to the Warhawk win.

UWW  (8-2) will take on Bethany Lutheran Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
