BOX SCORE
SAN DIEGO - The Sea Lions rallied from 15 points down to tie their Thursday non-conference tilt with Saint Mary's, but the Belles would prevail 57-51. The game was part of the 2010 Surf N Slam Classic held in Golden Gym.
At first glance on paper it looks like PLNU did everything just as well--if not better--than the Indiana team. The Sea Lions shot 31 percent to the Belles' 29 percent; they made 100 percent of their free throws while Saint Mary's averaged 76 percent. Point Loma had six blocks and the Belles had just two.
But here's where things went in favor of Saint Mary's: the Belles outrebounded the Sea Lions 48-39, 15 of which were offensive, compared to Loma's nine offensive boards; PLNU had four more turnovers than SMC, and committed eight more personal fouls, while only making four appearances at the free throw line. The Belles visited the stripe 21 times.
The Belles scored 13 unanswered points in the middle of the first half to get away from the Sea Lions. After more minutes of Loma missed shots, turnovers, and fouls, Saint Mary's was able to put as much as a 14-point gap behind them. Point Loma left the court at halftime down 20-31.
It took Saint Mary's eight minutes to score six points, while the Sea Lions were doing triple time in the second half, evening the score 37-37. However, a couple turnovers later and the Belles were back up 50-42 with six minutes left to play. After battling back to within two points of Saint Mary's, Point Loma was not able to hold on, losing 51-57.
Crissa Jackson - PLNU's all-tournament selection - tallied 19 points and five assists, while Andrea Campbell pulled down 11 rebounds and had five blocks. Saint Mary's Kelley Murphy shined with a double-double, 19 points and 16 rebounds. Patsy Mahoney had 17 points and three steals for the Belles, who are now 8-3 overall. The Sea Lions even out to a 6-6 overall record.
Tonight's game was the Sea Lions last competition in the Surf N' Slam tournament. They will travel to El Cajon to take on conference foe San Diego Christian on Tuesday, Jan 4 at 5:30 pm.
