Baseball vs. Dixie State

Sea Lions Sweep Dixie State

The NAIA second-ranked Sea Lions swept visiting NCAA DII Dixie State (UT) 11-3, 3-2 at Carroll B. Land Stadium Friday. Starters Chad Blauer and Brandon Dixon earned wins and PLNU belted four homeruns, two by Rashad Taylor in the nightcap.

The opener began shakily for Point Loma. Blauer allowed a first-inning run to the Red Storm but the Green and Gold evened the score in the home half of the frame on a sac fly from Steven Winnick. Brett Adams nailed a two-run homer in the third to put DSC up 3-1. The Sea Lions roared back with a run in the third and then two more in the fourth, highlighted by a solo shot from Wes Kartch.

PLNU added insurance runs in the next two frames and then plated four in the seventh to put the game away. Tyler Kuehl drove in two with a single and Ian MacMaster clubbed a two-run shot over the right field wall.

Blauer, who was on the ropes early, settled in nicely. The senior lasted six complete innings allowing three runs on five hits to earn his second win of the year. Robby Ross entered in the seventh and picked up a save with a stellar three inning outing that saw just two Red Storm players reach base.

The Sea Lions collected 13 hits with Kartch, Kuehl,  Allen Boyer and Alex Cameron each with two apiece. Kartch, Kuehl and MacMaster each drove in two runners.

Taylor, the hero of Wednesday's game against Chapman, nailed a two-run homer in the bottom of the first in game two. The shot looked like it was going to stand up thanks to an excellent performance from Dixon. The lefty mostly cruised through six innings against Dixie State, yielding just one hit over that span. The Red Storm threatened just once when they had runners on second and third in the fourth inning, but Dixon fanned one batter and then induced a pop-up.

When Taylor launched his second homer of the game, a solo shot in the sixth, it looked at the time just be an extra run that put the Sea Lions up 3-0.

The game became much more interesting after Red Storm catcher Drew Oldfield singled to lead off the seventh and Chase Pittsenbarger followed with a shot over the center field wall. The Sea Lion faithful became more nervous when Jordan Handley singled to put the tying run on base with just one out.

Dixon reached back again, however, getting a pop up to MacMaster at first and a fly ball to end the game.

Justin Prodan was the hard-luck pitcher for Dixie State (2-2). He surrendered just three runs on seven hits in a complete-game effort and was hung with the loss. Dixon (2-0) gave up just four hits and two earned runs.

The Sea Lions (7-0-1) have a few days off before traveling to La Sierra on Thursday for a 2:00 pm tilt.
