The NAIA ninth-ranked Sea Lions lost to The Master's 4-3 in ten innings at Carroll B. Land Stadium on Thursday. It was the second day in a row that PLNU fell by the same score to the visiting Mustangs.
Thursday's loss was even more gut-wrenching than the previous one, however, as the Sea Lions seemed to be in total control, but gave up three late runs before handing the game to TMC in the tenth.
Point Loma cruised through the first six innings of play against their conference foe. The Sea Lions took a 1-0 lead in the first on a RBI grounder from
Alex Cameron. Cameron and
Tyler Kuehl hit back-to-back doubles to start off the fourth and
Rashad Taylor hit a sac fly to make the score 3-0.
Sea Lion starter
Brandon Dixon breezed through six innings until Steve Vranau hit a two-run homerun in the seventh inning, cutting the lead to one.
PLNU had a golden opportunity to add an insurance run in the eighth but a double-play ended the threat. TMC's Chris Talley made the Sea Lions pay for failing to add to the score when he hit a two-out solo homerun in the ninth that evened the score at 3-all.
The Mustangs took their first lead of the game in the next frame. A one-out throwing error by Kuehl allowed Ben Ives to reach base. Ives stole second to move into scoring position and Joseph Zellar singled him in.
A.J. Work took the ball in the tenth and preserved the win by setting down the Sea Lions with a perfect inning. TMC starter Tyler Bersano improved to 5-3 after nine innings on the bump. He allowed three runs on seven hits.
Dixon went the first 8.2 innings and yielded three runs but was not involved in the decision.
Kenny Houser was hung with the loss, though the run he allowed was unearned.
The Sea Lions slipped to 28-11-1 overall, 17-9 GSAC. The Mustangs improved to 19-19, 12-14 GSAC.
The two squads wrap up their four-game series with a doubleheader in Santa Clarita on Saturday starting at noon.
