The NAIA No. 9-ranked Sea Lions got back on the winning track Saturday, sweeping The Master's 11-3 and 7-4 at Reese Field. PLNU (30-11-1) picked up its 30th win of the season and is now 19-9 in the GSAC. TMC, which won the first two games of the series with the Sea Lions, fell to 19-21, 12-16 GSAC.
Point Loma Nazarene closed to a game of Vanguard (20-8 GSAC) for second place in the conference standings. VUSC split its two games with Fresno Pacific on Saturday while California Baptist (23-5 GSAC) swept past Biola to maintain its hold on first place. With eight games left in the regular season it looks as though CBU, barring a late collapse, will claim the GSAC title and host the conference tournament.
The Sea Lions pounded out 14 hits against four Mustang hurlers in the opener Saturday.
Alex Cameron led the PLNU offense by going 4-for-6 with two RBI.
Allen Boyer and
Tyler Kuehl each had three hits and two RBI while
Wes Kartch drove in three.
Meanwhile,
Chad Blauer was in control of the TMC lineup, tossing a complete-game in which he allowed three runs on nine hits. Blauer improved to 9-1 on the year with the win. Taking the loss was Mustang starter David Goodenough who gave up four runs on nine hits in six frames on the hill.
PLNU scored three in the third, capped by a RBI double from Cameron and a two-run shot by Kuehl. The Sea Lions tacked on one in the fourth on another Cameron double and tacked on four in the seventh and three in the eighth. TMC pushed all their runs across in the final two frames.
Defending GSAC Pitcher of the Week,
Robby Ross (4-2), eked out a win in the nightcap. The PLNU lefty labored though 4.2 innings in which he allowed 11 hits and four runs.
Josh Dexheimer earned a tough save by taking the ball with one out in the fifth. He put an end to TMC's day by giving up just one hit over 2.1 innings.
The Sea Lions used the extra base hit to take an early lead. Boyer led off the game by clubbing his 12th round-tripper of the 2010 campaign; Kartch doubled home two in the second and
Jeff Fox ripped a solo homer in the third. The Mustangs got back into the game with two runs in both the second and fourth.
PLNU added an insurance run in the sixth when Kartch tripled and scored on a wild pitch.
Kartch, playing a flawless shortstop, collected three more hits in the second game. Boyer went 3-for-4 and
Steven Winnick was 2-for-3.
The Sea Lions travel to Santa Barbara on Wednesday for a doubleheader with Westmont starting at noon. The two squads play a twinbill at PLNU's Carroll B. Land Stadium next Saturday.
