Men's Soccer Falls to CSUSM 3-1

Sea Lions slip to 2-3 on the year

BOX SCORE

SAN MARCOS, Calif - The Sea Lions lost their third match in a row, falling 3-1 at Cal State San Marcos in front of a large partisan crowd at Mangrum Field. The loss drops PLNU to 2-3 overall while the crosstown Cougars improved to 3-3-1 with the win.

Cal State San Marcos came out attacking and it paid off in the 24th minute when Richie Kaiser collected a ball on the counter-attack. Kaiser split the Sea Lions' defense and dribbled from one side of the field to another.  Finding open space about 20 yards in front of net, he delivered a shot that found the back of the net to put CSUSM up 1-0.
Just three minutes later, the Cougars would double their lead. An attempted shot by CSUSM was touched but came away from PLNU keeper Keith Cline.  San Marcos took advantage of the mistake when Martin Suarez  took the ball away from Cline and tapped in a goal.
Still 2-0 CSUSM midway into the second half, the Sea Lions started to gain momentum and pushing the ball up the field.  PLNU halved the deficit when they scored in the 66th minute, as Joaquin Hernandez headed in a free kick off the foot of Macaine Pearcy.  Point Loma would control the tempo for the next 20 minutes of play, generating dangerous opportunities but could not find net to even the score.
The Cougars put the game away in the 85th minute of play.  With PLNU committing heavy numbers to the attack, Tyler Spitznagel found a ball in midfield, and played it high over the top.  Bradley Seidenglanz ran under it, and with the Cline charging hard to try to make a stop, Seidenglanz lifted a shot over the keeper and into the goal, sealing the win for CSUSM.

CSUSM had a 17-12 advantage in shots taken, though PLNU took six shots on goal compared to five from the Cougars. Cline had two saves while San Marcos netminder Kevin Ernst made five saves.
After three away matches, the Sea Lions return to their home pitch on Tuesday, September 21 when they host Marymount at 2:00 pm.
