SAN DIEGO - In a toss-up conference game, where either side could have won, Point Loma lost by a heartbreaking one point to The Master's College on Saturday evening in the Golden Gymnasium (71-72).
Both halves had quite a lot in common, as they ended with just one point separating the teams. The only difference was that, while the Sea Lions left the court at halftime with the upper hand, 25-24, the Mustangs got to leave the game with it, 72-71.
Leads were changed 15 times throughout the game, proving that it could have gone either way. When the Sea Lions were down 51-60 by the middle of the second half, Point Loma's six field goals to TMC's two allowed them to tie it up 66-all with three minutes left to play.
Though Master's scored four unanswered points in response to the Sea Lions comeback, a three-pointer and a layup by Crissa Jackson put Loma one point ahead with 12 seconds left to hang on. Those dozen moments were just enough for TMC's Erica Inge, as she made the game-winning layup with four seconds to spare, leaving Point Loma with a new 2-5 conference record.
Shockingly, the Sea Lions recorded nearly ten more rebounds than the Mustangs, 42-34, but fell short in shooting percentage (39.7 percent to 47.5 percent). Though Point Loma went to the free throw line five more times than TMC, they were only able to outshoot the Mustangs there by one.
What doesn't show up on the stats sheet is the three 3-point attempts by PLNU that rattled out of the rim and that TMC twice nearly lost the ball twice on their final possession.
The Sea Lions' starting five all recorded outstanding games, with points above ten each. Crissa Jackson led with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Kiley Berlinski had 16, Callie Rhoads had 14 points and five rebounds, and Lindsey Hill and Brianna Colon had ten points and eight boards apiece.
The Master's' Zoe Scott recorded 19 points, while Theresa Brown had a double-double with ten points and 12 boards. Ella Joines was another big scorer for the Mustangs, with 15 points, and Erica Inge was the clutch player of the night, with the game-winning layup, six points and nine assists.
TMC is now 5-1 in conference, 12-4 overall. Loma falls to 7-7 overall.
PLNU will host Concordia University on Tuesday, Jan. 11 at 5:30 pm.
