SAN DIEGO -- NAIA No. 4-ranked Point Loma Nazarene picked up yet another nail-biting win Wednesday at home against No. 14 Concordia. Defending GSAC Player of the Week
Kallie Caldwell scored another clutch goal on a free kick in the 87th minute to give the host Sea Lions a 1-0 victory.
The Sea Lions got off to a quick start in the match, launching 5 shots and 3 corner kicks in the first 25 minutes of play. Sophomore midfielder
Codi Cameron nearly connected five minutes into the game, but her shot hit the post.
With eight minutes left in the first half, the Eagles had their own chance to take the lead. Jacqueline Turner fired from point-blank range, but PLNU junior goalkeeper
Tiffany Kracy dove in front of the ball to keep the game scoreless heading into the break.
Kracy had one more save on the day, scooping the ball up out of a scrum in front of the net with 30 seconds left in the second half. Her counterpart, Bekah Garvin, tallied three saves for the Eagles.
PLNU continued to maintain control during most of the game, outshooting the visiting Eagles 9-3.
“Sooner or later, when you play in [the other team's] end long enough, you're going to get your breaks,” said Coach
Tim Hall.
When the clock showed three minutes to go, the Sea Lions finally caught their break, drawing a foul on the Eagle's side of the pitch.
Caldwell lined up to take the decisive free kick. She planned on sending the ball to one of her teammates, but she instead ended up sailing it over Garvin's outstretched arms and into the top of the net.
“Right before [the free kick],” said Caldwell, “I called [teammate
Erica Wessels] over and said, 'I'm not going to shoot it; I'm going to try and hit your head.' And it ended up going in.”
The goal was Caldwell's second game-winner in as many games. Against the Master's College on Saturday, she scored on a corner kick in the 86th minute.
With the win, the Sea Lions remained undefeated on the year, improving to 14-0-1 overall, 6-0 in GSAC play. The Eagles dropped to 11-3-1 overall, 3-2-1 in the GSAC.
Next up for the Sea Lions is a home contest Saturday against unranked Biola University. The Eagles are coming off of back-to-back upsets over Azusa Pacific and Westmont. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 pm.
