Loma Overcome by Skyhawks

Sea Lions drop to 4-2 after loss to NCAA DII foe

box score

SAN DIEGO – NCAA DII No. 6-ranked Fort Lewis (Colo.) defeated Point Loma Nazarene 68-54 Monday night in Golden Gym. The loss drops the Sea Lions to 4-2 overall while the Skyhawks improved to 2-0 on the year.

PLNU hung with the visitors in the opening minutes of the non-conference match, but Fort Lewis was too hot from the field – and from long-range—and started to pull away in the middle of the first half.

FLC opened up a 13-point lead at the two-minute mark. The two teams traded buckets before a Crissa Jackson trey at the buzzer closed the margin to ten. Coming out of the break the Sea Lions trailed 41-31.

The Skyhawks, who shot over 60 percent from the field early in the contest, dropped down to the mid-40s by the second. But PLNU had trouble getting inside against the team from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and were forced to attempt lower percentage shots. That contributed to the Green and Gold shooting just 29 percent for the game.

Point Loma sliced the deficit down to eight on a couple of occasions after intermission but the Skyhawks always managed to come up with a big shot—usually a three—that slowed down PLNU's momentum and kept the gap in double-figures.

The largest lead of the night for Skyhawks was 17 points, with just over seven minutes remaining in the contest.

Jackson led PLNU with 15 points with Nyla Bailey adding 12 points and six rebounds. Joelle Herron contributed eight points.

Dana Scheribvogel paced the Skyhawks with 16 points. Teammate Erika Richards had 15 points and Jamie Simmons had 10. May Rose Paiz contributed 13 boards and nine points to the win.

The Sea Lions head to Montana for a pair of games later this week. On Wednesday they take on Carroll at 7:00 pm followed by a match-up at Montana Tech on Friday.
