Sea Lions Blanked in 2011 Season Opener

PLNU manages just five hits against CSU San Marcos

BOX SCORE

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – NAIA No. 8-ranked Point Loma Nazarene opened the 2011 season Tuesday with disappointing results: a 7-0 setback at Cal State San Marcos. The Sea Lions managed just five hits against Cougar hurlers in the loss while committing four errors in the field.

CSUSM improved to 3-1 with the win. The Cougars plated an unearned run in the third - the only run the home team would need. San Marcos tacked on a run in the fifth and then added five insurances runs in the seventh for the final 7-0 score.

PLNU utilized four pitchers Tuesday. Starter Garrett Levsen (0-1) toed the rubber for six innings, yielding eight hits and one earned run with four strikeouts. Kenny Houser took over in the seventh and was roughed up for four runs, three earned, in just two-thirds of an inning. Josh Dexheimer finished out the seventh but surrendered a run. Maurice Wilhelm threw a scoreless eighth in relief.

Adam Bileckyj (1-0) picked up the win for the Cougars after a solid seven-inning stint in which he gave up just three hits while fanning seven Sea Lions. Kyle Smart closed out the non-conference tilt with a two scoreless frames on the hill.

Point Loma's five hits were distributed among five players. The Sea Lions had their chances early after two runners reached third base, but no one came up with the big hit. Leading CSUSM with three hits was left fielder Victor Serna. Kevin Silvett, Jeremy Baum and Johnny Omahen each contributed two hits to the 15-hit Cougar total.

PLNU will open the home campaign with a double-header against Oregon Tech on Saturday. First pitch at Carroll B. Land Stadium is slated for 11:00 am.
