Loma Triumphs in Season Opener; Hills Earns 300th Win Leading PLNU Women

NAIA No. 3 PLNU tops NCAA DII #15 Tritons; Coach Hills Picks Up 300th Win at Point Loma

LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The first match of the year for Point Loma Nazarene ended in a 6-3 victory over DII 15th ranked UCSD on Northview Courts on Tuesday. The NAIA No. 3-ranked Sea Lions took wins on all courts except No. 2 and No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles.

The win was also the 300th for Rich Hills as head coach for the Sea Lion women. Hills has already recorded that many wins - and more - leading the men.

Doubles win came easy on court one, where Kristin Strimple and Ashley Litchfield blanked their opponets 8-0,  but were fought for on the others. Jessica Kwan and Rachel Owens pulled out ahead, beating their opponents 8-6. Micah Adair and Wileen Chiu battled but lost with 9-7 being the final score. Doubles finished one, two, three, giving Loma momentum heading into the singles matches.

In singles, Strimple, Kwan and Adair won in straight sets at courts one, three, and five respectively. Adair in particular played an impressive game in her first college match, winning 6-2, 6-1 against senior Roxanna Pourmirzaie of UCSD .

This gave Loma the match, relieving the pressure on the other women. Wileen Chiu at six split sets, coming back from behind to win 10-4 in a tie breaker over Tara Vanooteghem. Litchfield and Rachel Owens lost on courts two and four, respectively. Both exerted tremendous effort but only Litchfield split sets, barely losing to UCSD's senior Cindy Dao 10-8 in the tie-breaker.

"We were happy to get a 6-3 win," says PLNU head coach Rich Hills. "Two of our loses were close and we could have won. We are a ways from where we want to be but its a good start."

The Sea Lions begin the season strong with 1-0 going into their next match against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on February 18th at 3 p.m. on home courts. There will be no break because the women's first conference match will be against No. 1 ranked Fresno Pacific the next day.
