Sea Lions fall 3-2 and 7-4; swept in season series by VUSC

box game one | box game two

SAN DIEGO – Point Loma Nazarene was swept in a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader by Vanguard at Carroll B. Land Stadium Saturday by scores of 3-2 and 7-4.

The loss drops the Sea Lions to 13-20 overall and into last place in the GSAC with a 6-14 mark. The Lions, which were at the bottom of the standings before sweeping the four-game series with PLNU, improved to 14-11, 5-9 conference.

PLNU took an early 1-0 lead in the opening game when Tyler Nordgren singled home Trey Hunt in the second inning. VUSC scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth frames to go up 3-1.

The Sea Lions got a run closer in the sixth on a solo homer from Ricky Gingras but that's as close as the Green and Gold could get. PLNU was especially frustrated in the bottom of the ninth when nothing came of a two-on, no out opportunity.

Tyler Garkow (3-5) suffered the loss though he pitched well, allowing three runs in seven innings. Garrett Levsen and Garrett Gooding were nearly perfect in three combined innings of relief.

Ruben Orosco (2-2) earned the win for the Lion with Kevin Ponzo picking up his fourth save.

Point Loma committed a two-out error in the top of the first inning of the nightcap and that opened the floodgates thanks to a bases-clearing, three-run double from Michael Castello. The Lions added to their lead with a run in the third, two in the sixth and one in the seventh.

The Sea Lions finally got to VUSC after starter Scott Simmons exited at the end of six. PLNU's Clinton Harwick and Gingras each had RBIs in the seventh inning.

The Green and Gold scored twice more in the eighth after Eddie Roberts and Daniel Hernandez each rapped out RBI hits but that would end the day's scoring, the Sea Lions losing 7-4.

Jack Archie fell to 2-2 after yielding five runs (two earned) in a five inning start. Chad Etchison, Dani Schlarmann and Nolan Stouder all toed the rubber for PLNU.

Scott Simmons (5-2) was the winning pitcher for Vanguard.

The Sea Lions host Fresno Pacific for two games on Thursday starting at noon.
