LA MIRADA, Calif. -- The NAIA seventh-ranked Sea Lions defeated Biola in a GSAC match Saturday, 6-3. Point Loma Nazarene head coach Rich Hills gave some of his reserves a chance to play against the Eagles.

The day's competition began with singles play and the Sea Lions notched the five points needed for the team victory before beginning doubles. 

From the top of the ladder down: Gregory De Andrade beat Weston Leopold 6-0, 6-2; Diego Tavera edged David Mossman in a super tie-breaker 3-6, 6-4 (10-6); Chad Rubin cruised to a 6-1, 6-1win over Brent Worthington 6-1, 6-1; Andrew Combs beat Thomas Coibion 6-1, 6-4 and Kaptan Kaster felled Isaiah Pekary 6-3, 6-2. The lone Biola point in singles was on six where Anthony Sena topped PLNU's Matthew Booth 6-4, 6-1. 

Doubles didn't go as well for the Sea Lions where they lost two of three points. Kaster and Combs got past Leopold and Worthington 8-6 on court one but the other two matches swung over to the Eagles, each by an 8-3 score.

PLNU (9-6, 5-4 GSAC) will host Xavier (La.) Monday at 2:00 pm for what should be a tough non-conference contest. The No. 9-ranked Gold Rush are 10-4 overall in 2011-12 and 0-0 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. XU's men are attempting to qualify for the NAIA National Championship for the fourth consecutive season.

The Gold Rush qualified for the last three NAIA National Championships and won first-round matches in 2009 and 2010. The XU men won five consecutive Gulf Coast Athletic Conference championships during the last six years (2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010). The GCAC did not determine a champion in 2011, but the XU men extended their postseason tournament streak by winning the championship of an NAIA unaffiliated group tourney.
