Sea Lions drop first PWC match

Holy Names tops PLNU in men's soccer

OAKLAND--Holy Names scored twice in the first 15 minutes of the match and moved on from there to a 3-0 men's soccer win in the first-ever Pacific West Conference athletic event for Point Loma Nazarene University on Thursday afternoon.

The Sea Lions dropped to 1-2 on the season and are now 0-1 in PWC play. The Hawks improved to 3-0-1 in 2012 and are 1-0 in conference play.

Jamie Phillips volleyed in a free kick at the 14-minute mark past PLNU goalkeeper Carter Phillips and Christian Muehlberger added a penalty kick goal one minute later to provide all the offense that Holy Names would need on the day. The hosts added one more score with just two minutes left in the match on a shot by Rasmus Larsson to account for the final 3-0 tally.

PLNU had its best opportunity of the day at the 80-minute frame on a shot by Dylan Wingrove that just missed. Overall, the Sea Lions and Hawks each had nine shots on the day, but six were on goal for Holy Names and only Wingrove's shot had to be saved for PLNU.

Philip Poser posted a shutout in the goal for the Hawks.

Coach Phil Wolf's team will look to get back on track on Saturday when they travel across the bay to San Francisco to take on Academy of Art at noon.
