SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma men's basketball team saw its best chance so far to get a win in Pacific West Conference play slip through its fingers on Saturday night (Jan. 26) when it fell to Holy Names in overtime, 61-55.
Todd Campbell and
Oivind Lundestad each scored a season-best 18 points to lead the Sea Lions. Lundestad knocked down 5-of-7 shots, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range, en route to his 18 points. Campbell notched a double-double with his 18 points (8-of-13) and 10 rebounds.
The last of Campbell's points tied up the game with 30 seconds remaining in regulation. Campbell came from out of nowhere on the play, grabbing the rebound off
Taylor Wetherell's missed free throw and put it back in to knot the game at 51-51. The Sea Lions then locked down on the Hawks during the final possession of regulation, forcing them into a contested shot as time expired, to send the game to overtime.
PLNU would then score the first two points of overtime on a pair of free throws by Lundestad to take their first lead since the 8:10 mark in the second half. Holy Names did not get rattled after the Sea Lions went on top and answered by outscoring PLNU 10-2 the rest of the overtime period to earn the win.
The Sea Lions had to fight back from an eight-point deficit with less than three minutes remaining just to force overtime. Campbell cut the Hawks' lead to five with a free throw and a put-back layup following a missed 3-pointer. PLNU then went into a press on defense and Lundestad came up with the steal in the backcourt, and Wetherell knocked down a trey to bring the Sea Lions within two points and set Campbell up to force overtime.
Free throws proved to be the undoing for the Sea Lions in this tightly contested contest. PLNU was just 6-of-23 from the charity stripe, including Lundestad's 4-for-4 effort, in the six-point loss. Point Loma's biggest advantage came on the offensive glass where it outrebounded the Hawks 17-6. PLNU also forced HNU into 25 turnovers, converting that into 26 points.
PLNU also got 10 points off the bench from
Trevor Peterson, and 10 rebounds from
AJ Ussery. Tyler Fry led HNU with 12 points and nine rebounds.
The win was the first of the season for HNU in PacWest play as they improved to 4-13 on the season (1-8 PacWest). The Sea Lions are still looking to get in the win column in the conference standings. They sit at 0-8 in conference and 3-13 overall.
The Sea Lions will continue its homestand next week with three contests against Bay Area schools. Academy of Art will come to town on Thursday, Jan. 31 and Dominican on Saturday, Feb. 2. The Sea Lions will close out the homestand against Notre Dame de Namur on Monday, Feb. 4.
