Miramontes nets two goals in 2-1 win at HNU

Box Score

OAKLAND - Nathan Miramontes headed in goals in the 24th and 58th minutes to help the Point Loma men's soccer team come from behind to defeat Holy Names 2-1 on Monday (Oct. 14).

The win gives the Sea Lions (6-4-3, 4-1-3 PacWest) their 15th point in Pacific West Conference play and puts them into a four-way tie for first place with Fresno Pacific, Azusa Pacific and Cal Baptist. FPU will have a chance to move ahead of the rest of the pack when it plays at Hawaii Pacific later this evening. The loss drops HNU to 3-7-1 on the season and to 2-4-0 in the PacWest.

The Hawks jumped out to the early 1-0 lead in the seventh minute on David Norton's seventh goal of the season. Miramontes would provide the equalizer in the 24th minute when he rose above the crowd and headed Griffin Fuller's corner kick into the net.

Miramontes put PLNU in front for good in the 58th minute when the Sea Lions were able to once again connect with Miramontes for a header off a corner kick. This time it was Tyler Allen that was credited for the assist. These were Miramontes' second and third goals of the season.

"Games are won and lost in the penalty area and always talking about needing to make plays there," said PLNU head coach Phil Wolf. "Both Tyler and Griff were able to find Nathan off corners and he was able to get his head on it for the score.

"We lead the league in corner kicks and have been knocking on the door for a while, so it was nice to finally get one today," added Wolf.

Point Loma won the corner kick battle again today, 10-3, over Holy Names. It also outshot the Hawks 14-6 and 5-2 in shots on goal.

"This was a big weekend for us to get four points," Wolf noted. "We are moving in the right direction heading into the stretch run of the season."

The Point Loma men's soccer team will now return home to face one of the teams it is tied with for first place, Cal Baptist, on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
