SAN DIEGO - Alex Jaziri's goal in the third minute of overtime gave Cal State San Marcos a 1-0 win over the Point Loma men's soccer team in a non-conference match on Tuesday, Oct. 29.
The goal by the Cougars capped off a match that was the story of two halves. In the opening half the Sea Lions dominated outshooting CSUSM 11-3, including 4-0 on shots on goal. However, none of PLNU's shots found the net thanks to a valiant effort by the Cougar's goalkeeper Zach Sheppard who made all four of his saves in the first half, including two Point Loma shots that seemed destined for to break the scoreless tie.
The Cougars reversed their fortunes at the half and outshot PLNU 12-3 in the second half and overtime. All four of their shots on goal came after the break.
With the loss Point Loma is 7-6-3 on the season (5-2-3 Pacific West Conference) with two matches left to play. The Sea Lions are still in the hunt for postseason play as they would qualify for the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) with a .500 or better record. The win was CSUSM's 10th of the season as it improved to 10-4-2.
"Disappointing result that unfortunately was a game that got away from us," said PLNU head coach
Phil Wolf. "When we left the game 0-0 in the first half we were playing with fire as we probably should have been up one or two goals at the break."
Carter Phillips was perfect in net for Point Loma until that last shot. He had three saves for the match.
Daniel ten Bosch led PLNU with four shots.
Point Loma will return to conference play on Saturday (Nov. 2) when it travels to Fresno Pacific for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.
"We are gutted after this one, but we have to move on with a massive challenge in going on the road to Fresno," Wolf concluded. "We look forward to an incredible challenge on Saturday."
