Sea Lions' home winning streak snapped at 11

Box Score

SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma volleyball team had its 11-match home winning streak snapped on Tuesday (Oct. 29) by California Baptist, 26-24, 21-25, 25-22 and 25-16.

The result also breaks a tie for second place in the Pacific West Conference. Cal Baptist (16-7) now assumes lone possession of second place in the conference at 13-2, one match behind BYU-Hawaii. The Sea Lions (19-6, 12-3 PacWest) dropped to third in the conference, one game back of Cal Baptist and two games behind BYUH (18-1, 13-1 PacWest). This was the first time since Sept. 13 that the Sea Lions have lost back-to-back matches.

When Cal Baptist won the first set 26-24 it also ended PLNU's streak of sets won at 26. This was the first set Point Loma had lost at Golden Gymnasium since Sept. 7, against Cal State Dominguez Hills. The set featured 16 ties and eight lead changes. PLNU was down 22-19 before scoring five of the next six points to go on top 24-23. However, CBU had one last run in them and scored the final three points to take the first set.

This is the way nearly all the sets would go as the two teams were very evenly matched. PLNU managed to pull off the second set with a timely late push of its own. In the third set, Point Loma never led until the 21-20 mark but once again CBU scored five of the final six points to win the set.

Down by one set heading into the fourth, PLNU looked to be refocused as it came out and took the 12-8 lead. This would be the high point of the set though as Cal Baptist would then mount a 15-1 run and go on to take the set and the match.

To tell the story of their defeat, Point Loma needs to do nothing but point to their errors. In the match the Sea Lions had 31 hitting errors, 12 service errors and five ball handling errors to gift the Lancers 48 points. Meanwhile, CBU had just 33 combined errors in the contest. The 31 hitting errors and 12 service errors were both season-highs for the Sea Lions.

Kelli LeClair had 14 kills, and mcKensey Wise added eight to lead the Sea Lions. Savannah Wedemeyer returned to the court after missing the last two matches and registered 38 assists. Heather Leavitt also notched a match-high 22 digs. Kim McCalmont led Cal Baptist with 14 kills and also added 10 digs for the double-double.

The Point Loma volleyball team will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 2 against perennial powerhouse Fresno Pacific at 4:00 p.m.
