SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - Dominican (CA) had just three turnovers in the entire game as the Point Loma men's basketball team fell on the road to the Penguins, 68-62, on Saturday (Dec. 7).
The Sea Lions went 1-2 on their opening Pacific West Conference road trip and are now 5-3 on the season. Those two losses in the Bay Area for PLNU were by a combined eight points. Dominican improved to 8-2 (2-0 PacWest) with the win.
Hayden Lescault scored a game-high 19 points for the Sea Lions, and
Marek Klassen added 18. Lescault paced PLNU with five assists, while Klassen hit four 3-pointers and tied for the team-lead with six rebounds.
Devin Golston had 18 points to lead four Penguins in double-figures. He also added a team-leading nine rebounds.
PLNU had an early 13-9 lead before Dominican scored 13 straight points over the next six minutes to take a lead, which it would never relinquish. They would take a 27-21 lead into halftime.
"We just got a little jittery in first half and they were able to take advantage of that," said PLNU head coach
Bill Carr. "Dominican played well and they did a good job of taking care of the ball."
In the second half Dominican again was able to put together a run. It scored 11 of 14 points during one stretch to take a 15-point lead (49-34) with 11:12 remaining. The Sea Lions would not let themselves go away that easily though. They had an 8-1 run late in the half to cut the Penguins lead to six points with just over two minutes remaining.
After DU hit a pair of free throws, Lescault made an old fashion three point play to bring PLNU to within five (61-56) with 1:35 remaining. The teams would trade baskets over the next minute and a 3-pointer by Klassen cut it to four (66-62) with 22 second left. PLNU would try to get a foul but the Penguins found Dominique Taplin open in the paint for the dunk which sealed the game.
"We have to execute better and be more disciplined at the end of games," Carr concluded.
PLNU had just nine turnovers in the game and outrebounded Dominican 41-37. But the Penguins were able to capitalize on their 11-2 edge in points off turnovers.
Point Loma will return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 10, when it goes to Ramona, Calif., to face St. Katherine at 8:00 p.m.
