Point Loma splits doubleheader with Toros

[Game 1 box score] [Game 2 box score]

CARSON, Calif. - The Point Loma baseball team came away with a doubleheader split at Cal State Dominguez Hills, winning game one 5-3 and falling in game two 9-6, on Saturday (Feb. 9), but the way the day ended left the Sea Lions shaking their heads.

PLNU (1-4) grabbed its first win of the season behind the arm of Tyler Garkow and bat of Zach Allen in game one. Then in game two, the Sea Lions were on the comeback trail, down just one with runners at first and third, when the umpire decided to call the game due to darkness.

Game 1
Zach Allen drove in three runs and Tyler Garkow held Cal State Dominguez Hills to just two runs over seven innings to lead Point Loma to a 5-3 win.

The Sea Lions broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the seventh when AJ Derr delivered a sacrifice fly after PLNU had loaded the bases with no outs. Allen then came through with a opposite field single to score two more runs and put the Sea Lions up by three runs (4-1). Point Loma would tack on another run on a solo homer by Joseph Keller in the top of the eighth.

Garkow (1-1) picked up the win by giving up just two runs (one earned) over seven innings pitched. He allowed eight hits and two walks while striking out three. Sebastian Santos would earn the save by allowing just an unearned run and three hits over the final two innings while striking out three.

"Garkow was outstanding today," said PLNU head coach Joe Schaefer. "He worked through some early trouble and settled in to keep us in the game."

Mark Marcoux, Clinton Harwick and Keller each collected two hits for Point Loma which was outhit by the Toros 11-9. Keller also crossed the plate twice.

Game 2
Mark Marcoux delivered a two-out, bases loaded single to left to score two and bring Point Loma back to within one at 9-8 in the top of the seventh and that is where the game ended. Upon the Sea Lions plating two runs the umpires decided to call off the rest of the game due to darkness, hence erasing the seventh inning and giving the Toros the 9-6 win.

The game was a high scoring affair throughout as PLNU put up two runs apiece in the first, third and fourth. However, despite their highest scoring game of the season Point Loma only held the lead early as Marcoux stole home and Trey Hunt singled in Clinton Harwick to put PLNU up 2-0 in the top of the first.

The Toros chipped away at the lead with a run in the first and then scored four in the bottom of the second to take a 5-2 lead. They would add one more in the third and three in the fifth.

Marcoux went 3-for-4 with two runs scored out of the leadoff spot for the Sea Lions. Hunt knocked in two runs and had two hits. Chris Allen went 4-for-4, and Carlos Avila drove in three runs to lead the Toros.

Next game
The Sea Lions will now prepare to take on local rival, UC San Diego, in a single nine-inning game on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 6:00 p.m.
