Sea Lions welcome in APU for four-game series

WHAT'S HAPPENING:

After two weeks of long road trips the Point Loma baseball will return to Carroll B. Land Stadium this weekend to host longtime rival Azusa Pacific in a Pacific West Conference showdown. The teams will begin the four-game series with a doubleheader on Friday, Mar. 15 at noon. The teams play another doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon to close out the series.

A LOOK AT THE SEA LIONS:
Point Loma returns home after playing two straight PacWest series on the road. PLNU split with Dixie State and won the opener against Grand Canyon, before dropping the next three. The Sea Lions are now 8-11 on the season and in sixth place in the PacWest with a 6-6 record. Mike Marcoux leads the team and ranks eighth in the PacWest with a .367 batting average. Zach Allen paces the league and the Sea Lions with 10 stolen bases. Clinton Harwick is tied for second in the conference with seven steals.

Senior pitcher Tyler Garkow is ranked amongst the PacWest leaders in multiple categories. He is tied for the league lead with four wins and three complete games. He is also ranked seventh with a 2.43 earned run average and second with 42 innings pitched. Fellow senior pitcher Justin Lawrence is second in the PacWest with 30 strikeouts and two complete games. Opponents are hitting just .210 off him (sixth in PacWest). Garret Levsen is tied for the league lead with two saves.

As a team, PLNU ranks second in the PacWest with a .973 team fielding percentage. They also lead the league with 39 stolen bases. 

A LOOK AT AZUSA PACIFIC:
The APU Cougars are 4-14 on the season, 2-6 in the PacWest and 3-6 on the road. They recently snapped a six-game losing streaks as they won the final game of the Fresno Pacific series 2-0, to avoid a four-game sweep. Matt Kimmel leads the team with a .323 batting average and five stolen bases. He is also tied with Brendan Casey for the team-lead with 11 RBI. Jason Plowman leads the team with a 2.89 ERA over five starts and 28 innings pitched.

Following the series, the Point Loma baseball team will prepare to host Bethesda University in a mid-week game on Wednesday, Mar. 20 at 3:00 p.m.
