ST. GEORGE, Utah - The Point Loma baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Dixie State on Saturday (Mar. 2), falling 4-1 in the opener and 8-3 in the nightcap.
The losses drop PLNU to 5-8 on the season and evened their record in the Pacific West Conference at 3-3. This was the PacWest opener for Dixie State which moved to 9-1 with the wins (2-0 PacWest).
Game 1
The Red Storm scored two runs in the second inning on four straight hits, and then added single runs in the fourth and the fifth to win the opener, 4-1.
Mike Dedrick (2-1) threw 7.2 innings of one-run ball to pick up the win. He allowed just three hits and one run while walking five and striking out seven. Kort Christoffersen pitched the final 1.1 innings allowing just one hit while striking out two to earn the save.
Tyler Garkow (3-1) threw all eight innings for PLNU but was still saddled with his first loss of the season. He allowed 10 hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out four. The runs in the second inning broke Garkow's streak of 17 consecutive scoreless innings.
Jordan Hanley went 2-for-5 with an RBI out of the leadoff spot for the Red Storm. Tyler Slesk added two runs scored.
Bryan Burkhead was 2-for-3 for the Sea Lions and added an RBI on a double in the sixth inning which plated
Clinton Harwick.
Game 2
Kevin Kline knocked in four runs to lead Dixie State to an 8-3 win over Point Loma in the nightcap.
Kline was part of two early rallies for the Red Storm which saw them take a 6-0 lead after three innings. Kline singled in two in the first inning and another in Dixie State's four-run third inning. He would add another RBI on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning and end the game 2-for-3 with a run scored and four RBI.
Sam Friend improved to 3-0 on the season as he held PLNU six hits and three runs (one earned) over 5.2 innings pitched.
Trey Hunt was 2-for-3 with a stolen base to lead the Sea Lions.
