SAN DIEGO - Cal State San Marcos' James Dykstra outdueled Point Loma's
Tyler Garkow in a meeting of No. 1 starters on Friday (Mar. 22), to lead the Cougars to a 3-1 win.
Cal State San Marcos is now 20-2 on the season as PLNU drops below .500 to 12-13.
Dykstra pitched a complete game, striking out eight and allowing seven hits and one run to improve to 7-0 on the season.
Garkow (4-3) took the loss after giving up seven hits and three runs in seven innings. He struck out five and did not walk a batter. Cal State San Marcos only got to the Sea Lions' senior pitcher n the third and fourth innings. He gave up two runs on four hits in the third and a run in the fourth on a pair of singles. Those would be six of the seven hits the Cougars would get in the game.
PLNU also had seven base hits including
Bryan Burkhead's fourth home run of the season which accounted for the Sea Lions' lone run.
Trey Hunt added two hits for PLNU.
Kyle Secciani drove in runs for the Cougars during both their third and fourth inning rallies. Brandon Bentson was 2-for-4, and the only student-athlete for CSUSM to have a multi-hit game.
These teams will continue their series on Saturday, Mar. 23 when the series shift to Cal State San Marcos. The teams will play a doubleheader starting at Noon.
