Bats lead PLNU to doubleheader sweep of HPU

SAN DIEGO - The bats broke out for nine runs in both games of a doubleheader to lead the Point Loma baseball team to 9-2 and 9-4 wins over Hawaii Pacific on Friday, Mar. 29.

The wins move PLNU to 14-15 on the season and into a virtual tie with Dixie State for third place in the Pacific West Conference with an 11-7 record. PLNU is still five games behind conference-leader Grand Canyon (15-1 PacWest).

It was the left side of the Sea Lions' infield that would power the offense today. Third baseman Tyler Nordgren and shortstop Tanner Handa each went 4-for-7 in the two games. Nordgren also scored four runs and drove in three others. Handa had also added five RBI.

Game 1
Tanner Handa drove in three runs and Tyler Garkow pitched seven strong innings to lead Point Loma to a 9-2 in the opener.

Handa, got the start at shortstop for the first time this season, and responded with two hits, three RBI and a runs scored. PLNU also got two hits each from AJ Derr, Tyler Nordgren and Mike Marcoux. Both Nordgren's hits went for doubles as he also scored twice and drove in a run.

Garkow (5-3) went the first seven innings allowing just two runs and five hits. His only blemish came on Marvin Campbell's two-run homer in the third. He also struck out two batters.

Tre Haliburton-Goeas (3-4) took the loss. He surrendered  eight hits and six runs over 5.1 innings.

Game 2
Point Loma put together two big innings as they scored three in the second and six more in the fifth to earn a 9-4 win.

Nordgren drove in three runs and scored two others. He crucial in both rallied as got the Sea Lions on the board with their first run in the second and eventually came around to score. He would add two more RBI on a bases loaded single in the fifth.

Trey Hunt and Tanner Handa also had multi-hit games for PLNU. Handa added two RBI and Hunt one. The Sea Lions scored nine runs and left just four runners on base in the game.

Mickey Dunleavy (2-4) earned the win in relief of Sebastian Santos. Brett Carlile and Garret Levsen would each add a scoreless inning of relief.

Nick Woodward (2-1) took the loss for the Sea Warriors. He allowed five runs (four earned) and four walks in 4.1 innings pitched.

These teams will get back together on Saturday to conclude their series with another doubleheader starting at Noon.
