Burkhead, Littlefield power PLNU to pair of wins

[Game 1 box score] [Game 2 box score]

OAKLAND - PLNU's bats broke out for nine runs in the opener and eight more in the nightcap as the Sea Lions swept a doubleheader from Holy Names, 9-2 and 8-4, on Friday (Apr. 19).

The victories extend Point Loma's season-best winning streak to six games. The Sea Lions are now 23-20 on the season and 18-11 in the Pacific West Conference. The Hawks are now 12-28 on the season and 9-19 in the PacWest.

Bryan Burkhead stayed hot at the plate for PLNU as he went 6-for-8 with two RBI and five runs scored. Andy Littlefield added five runs batted in.

Game 1
Bryan Burkhead and Trey Hunt each had two hits and crossed the plate twice to help Point Loma open the series with a 9-2 victory.

Tyler Garkow (7-3) battled through five innings to earn his seven victory of the season. He allowed eight hits and two earned runs while striking out a season-high nine Hawks.

He did not have much of a lead to work with as the Sea Lions did not get on the board until the fifth inning when they mounted a two-out rally. Mike Marcoux, who would score two runs in the game, looked like he was going to be stranded at second base after his one-out double. But Tyler Nordgren drew a walk and Burkhead then singled in Marcoux from second. After an error by the third baseman allowed Nordgren to come in and score, Andy Littlefield would single into left to bring in Burkhead and put Point Loma up 3-1.

The Hawks would knock Garkow from the game after putting up another run in the fifth. PLNU head coach would then call Brett Carlile out of the bullpen. Carlile would put up three shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out two, to preserve the win.

Eight of the nine starters for the Sea Lions collected a base hit. They also had four doubles in the game.

Game 2
Andy Littlefield drove in four runs, and Bryan Burkhead and Trey Hunt each scored three times as PLNU swept the doubleheader from Holy Names with an 8-4 win in the nightcap.

Garret Levsen pitched the final two innings without allowing a hit while striking out four for his PacWest leading ninth save.

PLNU put up single runs in the second, third and fourth innings and then broke out for three runs in the fifth. However, the Sea Lions were up just 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth when Holy Names loaded the bases. Once again coach Schaefer would go to his bullpen with the game on the line and the Sea Lion reliever responded with scoreless innings.

Levsen would get the next two batters on strikeouts, and then following a walk which forced in a run, before inducing a harmless fly out to right field to end the threat. The Sea Lions would tack on two insurance run in the seventh on a two-run single by Littlefield.

On the day Point Loma relievers worked eight innings allowing just one run and nine hits. This included Chad Etchison (2-2) who earned the victory in the nightcap.
