PLNU splits doubleheader with Urban Knights

OAKLAND - The Point Loma baseball team split a doubleheader with Academy of Art to open its road trip to the Bay Area on Friday (Apr. 5). The Sea Lions took the opener 3-1 behind pitcher Tyler Garkow, before falling 5-1 in the nightcap.

By splitting the twin-bill with their Pacific West Conference foe the Sea Lions now stand at 16-18 and 12-10. AAU improved to 3-26 and 2-18 in the PacWest.

Game 1
Tyler Garkow (6-1) scattered three hits and gave up just one run while striking out six in a complete game effort to lead PLNU to the 3-1 win in the opener.

Garkow dominated on the mound as he retired 12 straight batters from the fourth to the eighth inning. The only run he gave up was a solo shot in the ninth, and he allowed only one hit entering the ninth. He is now tied for the PacWest lead with six wins.

The Sea Lions staked Garkow to the early lead with a Tanner Handa RBI-single in the second and a bases loaded two-run single by AJ Derr in the fourth. PLNU had just four hits but drew six walks in the game.

Aaron Garabedian (0-7) took the loss after allowing four hits, five walks and three runs in seven innings. He did not strike out a batter in the contest.

Game 2
Nate Gercken (1-4) delivered seven innings of two hit, one run ball to help Academy of Art salvage the nightcap 5-1.

The Urban Knights took the early lead with a run in the first and two more in the third. They would add two more insurance runs in the fifth.

PLNU put up its only run in the top of the seventh on an RBI-groundout by Marcus Heisner.

Stefan Henderson scored two runs for AAU. No player on either squad registered a multi-hit game.

Sebastian Santos (3-2) was given the loss after allowing four hits, three walks and three runs in three innings.
