LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC San Diego took the rubber match of the three-game season series, 7-3, from city rival Point Loma on Tuesday night (Apr. 9).
The non-conference win moves the Tritons to 20-17 on the season and drops the Sea Lions to 17-20.
UCSD was powered by the middle of its order as the Tritons 3-6 hitters combined to go 6-for-13 with two home runs, five RBI and six runs scored. Justin Rahn had a two-run homer and finished 2-for-4 with three runs driven in. Richard Seigel hit the other home runs en route to scoring three runs in the contest.
Mike Marcoux powered the Sea Lions offense with two hits and an RBI. PLNU drew seven walks in the game but struggled to bring them across the plate, as it stranded 12 runners in the game compared to seven for UCSD.
Point Loma fell behind 1-0 after the first inning but quickly rallied for two runs in the second on RBI-singles by
Tanner Handa and Marcoux. UCSD would retake the lead in the fourth on Rahn's two-run homer. However, PLNU once again had a response as it rallied with two outs in the fifth to draw three walks and a hit by pitch to push another run across the plate and tie the game at 3-3.
That lead would once again be short lived as Seigel hit a solo blast with one out in the fifth to give the Tritons a lead they would never relinquish. They would add an insurance run in the sixth and two more in the seventh.
The Tritons bullpen was also the story of the game. Four UCSD relievers combined to hold the Sea Lions hitless over the final four innings. Dan Kolodin (3-1) earned the win after going the first five innings. He allowed six hits and three runs (all earned) while walking four and striking out three.
Mickey Dunleavy (3-5) took the loss for PLNU.
Point Loma will return home this weekend to host Pacific West Conference rival Fresno Pacific in a four-game series starting Friday at Noon.
