SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - It took all five sets but in the end the Point Loma volleyball team prevailed with a five-set victory (25-19, 23-25, 19-25, 25-20 and 15-9) over Dominican (CA) on Thursday (Sept. 19).
With the win to start off the Pacific West Conference schedule, the Sea Lions are now 7-3 on the season (1-0 PacWest). The loss drops the Penguins to 1-8 on the year and to 0-1 in the PacWest.
Heather Leavitt and
Alyssa Dwyer were once again the offensive catalysts for PLNU. Leavitt recorded a double-double with a team-leading 19 kills and 23 digs. Those 23 digs were also a career-best for the sophomore outside hitter. She also added two service aces. Dwyer had 16 kills on just 32 attempts to post a .281 hitting percentage.
Savannah Wedemeyer led the Sea Lions with 51 assists and also added six kills and 12 digs.
PLNU found itself down 2-1 after the third set. However, the Sea Lions would not be discouraged as they would never trail in the fourth or fifth set. PLNU quickly jumped op top 7-1 in the fourth set and rode that to a 25-20 win.
Then in the crucial fifth set, PLNU took the first six points behind
Christin Fisher's serve and held on to win the set and the match 15-9. Point Loma is now 3-1 this season in five-set matches.
This was the first of three matches for PLNU on its Bay Area road trip. They will now face Academy of Art on Friday (Sept. 20) and Holy Names on Saturday. Both matches will start at 7:00 p.m.
