PLNU set to face three opponents in Hawaii

THIS WEEK:
Pacific Conference play will continue for the Point Loma men's basketball team this week when it travels to Hawaii for a three-game road trip. The Sea Lions open at Hawaii Hilo on Monday at 9:30 p.m. (PST), and then take on Hawaii Pacific on Wednesday and BYU-Hawaii on Friday.

A LOOK AT THE SEA LIONS:
Point Loma improved to 8-4 on the season and even its PacWest record at 3-3 with a 71-68 victory over Holy Names in its last contest. Hayden Lescault scored the final nine points for PLNU which came back from an 11-point halftime deficit to earn the win. Lescault had the go-ahead layup with 39 seconds remaining then hit all four free throws in the final 12 seconds to ice the victory.

Lescault is the team's leading scorer and ranked fifth in the PacWest with 16.8 ppg. He is also pacing the squad in assists (3.9) and steals (1.6), while ranking eighth and fourth in the league, respectively. He has scored double-figures in 11 of 12 games this year, including reaching the 20-point plateau on four occasions. Marek Klassen (14.2), Junior Morgan (13.3) and Judd Welfringer (13.0) are also averaging in double-figures for coach Bill Carr's squad. Morgan is leading the team and ranked seventh in the league with a .585 field goal percentage. Klassen is 16th in scoring (14.2 ppg) and 10th in assists (3.6).

As a team, Point Loma is leading the conference in scoring defense (67.2) and field goal percentage (.513). The Sea Lions also rank second in scoring margin (+10.6), and third in assists (14.2), 3-point percentage defense (.325) and field goal percentage defense (.416).

A LOOK AT THE VULCANS:
Hawaii Hilo enters the game 3-9 on the season and 0-6 in the PacWest. The Vulcans have lost their last seven games in a row which included a 79-74 loss at home against PacWest leader Dixie State. Darnell Williams and his 12.2 ppg lead three Vulcans student-athletes in double-figures. Brandon Thomas is the team's leading rebounder with 7.1 boards per game, to go along with 10.3 ppg. As a team, UHH is averaging 72.6 ppg, but are being outrebounded by its opponents by 6.2 boards per contest.

A LOOK AT THE SEA WARRIORS:
Hawaii Pacific is 8-2 on the season and 3-1 in the PacWest. The Sea Warriors have won their last five games since they dropped a decision at Chaminade, 96-87, on Dec. 7. Justin Long leads HPU and ranks second in the PacWest with 18.6 ppg. He is averaging 2.5 treys per game and is shooting .472 from behind the arc. Malte Ziegenhagen is second on the team with 15.5 ppg while shooting .523 percent from the field. Darry Jones, Jr. (10.9 ppg) is also scoring in double-figures for HPU. As a team, Hawaii Pacific is outrebounding its opponents by 6.4 boards a game.

A LOOK AT THE SEASIDERS:
BYU-Hawaii is 4-5 this season and 2-1 in the PacWest. The Seasiders won their last contest 89-86 over Northwood at home. Jordan Ngatai led the team in scoring with 18 points. DeAndre Medlock is the team's leading scorer this season with 12.7 ppg. Ngatai (12.1) and Robbie Mitchell (10.4) are also averaging double-figures for the Seasiders.

NEXT WEEK:
Point Loma will return home next week to face Azusa Pacific in a PacWest Conference game on Friday, Jan. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in its lone contest of the week.
