Box Score SAN DIEGO – The PLNU men's soccer team remained undefeated in its last six games with a thrilling 1-0 double-overtime victory against Dixie State on Saturday, Oct. 25.
Nico Tagaloa notched the game-winning goal for the Sea Lions in the 108th minute of the match to lift PLNU (5-7-2, 5-3-1 PacWest) to its fourth straight win. Tagaloa found himself in front of the net and was able to corral a corner kick from
Daniel ten Bosch and put it away at the far post for his third goal of the season.
Prior to that goal both teams struggled to establish consistency in a match that lacked rhythm.
"The match didn't have much rhythm to it," said Point Loma head coach
Phil Wolf. "It's just one of those games where you're battling and struggling and suffering at times."
The second half would see the Sea Lions connecting more with opportunities coming from both sides off of set pieces.
Daniel ten Bosch and Tagaloa had a few other good looks early in the match but his header attempts sailed high over the crossbar. The other good chances would come from
Matt Rose and
Matt Steinhaus who would both take shots outside of the 18-yard box but both were off target.
After 90 minutes of play the Sea Lions found themselves at a draw and facing two 10-minute overtime periods against Dixie State.
During the first overtime, Dixie's back line would see pressure from the Sea Lions as two corners from ten Bosch would float dangerously into the box but both teams walk off scoreless after the first 10 minutes of overtime.
It was in this second overtime that coach Wolf made some shuffling of positions on the field and the Sea Lions were able to break through with the lone score of the match.
Both the Sea Lions and the Red Storm (1-11-1, 1-8-0 PacWest) would take 14 shots in the match.
Avrin Yakou made six saves for the Sea Lions, while Eddie Ortiz had five for the Red Storm.
"I think for our guys the nice thing we're doing is keeping clean sheets," said Wolf. "To be six games without losing is a positive for us and to get a result after a hard game is a relief."
The Sea Lions will look to keep their home winning streak going next Thursday when they face Notre Dame de Namur at 1:00 p.m.
