SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma baseball team won their first series of the year as they won the second game of the series which was suspended from Friday night 3-2 in 10 innings and before turning right around and dropping the series finale 4-2 on Saturday.
PLNU, which had won Friday's contest 5-4, is now 3-6 on the season. The win was the first of the season for UBC (1-2).
Game suspended from Friday
Mike Marcoux singled in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning give PLNU a 3-2 win over UBC in the game which was suspended on Friday evening due to fog.
The game was resumed in the bottom of the ninth but after PLNU failed to finish the game in nine innings the game when to extra innings.
Brett Carlile (1-2) pitched a scoreless 10th inning to set the Sea Lions up for the win.
Joseph Keller led off the inning and quickly fell behind 0-2 in the count but he battled through the at-bat and drew the leadoff walk.
Ryan Garcia followed with another walk to put two runner on base with no out. After
Matt Jervis put down a fantastic sacrifice bunt to advance both runners, Marcoux singled into right center field on the very first pitch he saw to give the Sea Lions their second straight win.
Both teams received great starting pitching and late rallies on Friday to cause the need for the game to be suspended before it was completed. PLNU twice came back to tie the contest and both times
Ryan Garcia was involved. First with the Sea Lions down 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth Garcia singled to center field with two outs to score
Tyler Hanzawa, who had led off the inning with a walk, from third.
After UBC went back in front on a Vinny Martin RBI-single in the seventh Point Loma again rallied to tie the game. With the fog rolling in Garcia doubled to right field with two outs then came in to score when the next batter
Matt Jervis reached on an error to tie the game at 2-2.
Garrett Gooding pitched the first seven innings for PLNU allowing four hits and two runs while striking out seven and walking three. UBC's starter Jeremy Newton was even better. He pitched the first six innings allowing five hits and just one run.
PLNU also received three scoreless innings out of its bullpens as
Noah Huggins,
Sebastian Santos and Carlile each held UBC without a run in their one inning of work. Carlile earned the victory in relief. Bryan Pawlina (0-1) took the loss.
Saturday's game
UBC's starting pitcher Alex Graham outbattled PLNU's starter
Kellen Sheppard to help the Thunderbirds salvage the final game of the three-game series with a 4-2 victory.
Graham (1-0) went the first six innings allowing six hits and two runs while walking one to keep UBC in the game. He bested Sheppard who was charged with the loss after allowing 11 hits and four runs in seven innings while striking out four.
Sheppard (1-2) had the opportunity to pitch with the lead early in the game as PLNU scored single runs in the second and fourth innings to lead 2-1.
UBC tied the game in the sixth on an RBI-double by Bruce Yari and then took the lead in the eighth when Kevin Biro singled to left field to score Tyson Popoff from third base.
PLNU rallied to load the bases with one out in the bottom of the eighth but UBC turned to its closer Curtis Taylor who got a fly out and a ground out to end the threat. He would come back and pitch a perfect ninth inning to earn his first save of the season.
Tyler Nordgren had three of the Sea Lions' seven hits in the game and scored one of their two runs.
Clinton Harwick also recorded a multi-hit game. Sebastian Wong was 3-for-4 to pace the Thunderbirds.
Next games
PLNU will continue its homestand next week when it hosts Le Sierra in a doubleheader on Friday and Bethesda for a doubleheader on Saturday. The first pitch for both games will be at 11:00 a.m.
