SAN DIEGO - After scoring just 40 points in the first 35 minutes of the game the Point Loma men's basketball team mounted a furious rally in the final five minutes but it came up short in a 73-64 loss to BYU-Hawaii on Saturday, Feb. 15.
The loss snaps the Sea Lions' four-game winning streak. They are now 15-9 on the season and drop into a tie with BYU-Hawaii (12-11) for fifth place in the Pacific West Conference standings at 10-8.
Point Loma could just not find the range on its shots for most of the game. They shot just 32 percent, including going 0-for-9 from 3-point range, in the first half as BYUH built a 32-25 lead at the half. The Seasiders would push their lead to 18 points with a 14-3 run to open the second half.
After Jordan Ngatai made his second of two free throws with 5:06 remaining to put BYUH on top 64-40 the game looked to be over but the Sea Lions would not go away that easily. They scored 21 of the next 23 points to cut the lead to five (66-61) with 1:30 remaining.
BYUH's Robbie Mitchell answered on the other end with a layup to put BYUH back in front by seven (68-61) with 45 seconds left. PLNU then missed a 3-point attempt on its ensuing possession and BYUH corralled the rebound and was fouled to secure the game.
"We made a nice run at the end and showed some pride to pull back into the game," said PLNU head coach
Bill Carr. "Once we started making some shots it really helped us. We struggled shooting tonight and we never really got into a rhythm.
"I thought we guarded well but I give credit to BYU-Hawaii," Carr continued. "They were very physical, came ready to play tonight and they took it to us."
DeAndre Medlock led the Seasiders with 15 points and seven rebounds.
Hayden Lescault paced PLNU with 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting.
Marek Klassen also added 15 points, and
Judd Welfringer came off the bench to score 17.
PLNU ended the game shooting just 36 percent from the field compared to 45 percent for BYUH. The Sea Lions were also outrebounded in the game 43-37 and outscored 44-28 on points in the paint.
Point Loma's next game will be next Saturday at Azusa Pacific. The game will tipoff at 3:00 p.m.
"We need to have a good week at practice. We have had four games in eight days and we haven't really been able to practice on us so we will go back and have a full week of practice to sharpen up a bit before playing next Saturday."
