SAN DIEGO -
Tyler Nordgren and
Ryan Garcia each drove in five runs in Saturday's doubleheader as the Point Loma baseball team won both games over Bethesda. The Sea Lions won the opener 10-1 and then had to come from behind in game two to earn the 6-3 victory.
This was the fourth straight with for Point Loma (7-6) and seventh in its last eight contests. The loss drop Bethesda to 4-17 on the season.
Game 1
Nordgren and Garcia both came up a triple short of the cycle and
Kellen Sheppard delivered another quality performance on the mound as the Sea Lions won the opener 10-1.
Garcia went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, three runs scored and a career-high three RBI. Nordgren also collected three hits including a double and a home run while driving in a Sea Lions' season-best four runs.
Both student-athletes where critical in each of the Sea Lions' rallies as they put up three runs in the first, fourth and sixth innings. In the first it was Nordgren which capped off the inning by doubling down the left field line to score two runners including Garcia.
In the fourth inning it was Garcia that provided the big blow as he followed up
Preston Sands' run-scoring double with a two-run homer over the right field wall for his first career dinger. In the sixth Garcia got the scoring started with a double to drive once again bring Sands around for a run and then he scored on Nordgren's big fly that cleared the left field wall.
Sands would match Garcia with three runs scored in the game. He and
AJ Derr also each posted two hits in support of start
Kellen Sheppard who turned in another brilliant performance at home.
He pitched seven innings of one-hit baseball while walking none and striking out five. Of the 21 outs Sheppard recorded 13 came on groundballs.
Game 2
Things where not looking good for the Sea Lions through the first four innings as they had just two hits but when their backs were against the wall they responded to earn the win. Trailing 3-0 entering the fifth inning, Point Loma rallied for five runs with two outs to earn a 6-3 win in the finale.
First
Matt Jervis doubled home
Anthony Torres and then he came into score on a single by
Preston Sands to cut the Flames lead to 3-2. After a wild pitch moved
Clinton Harwick, who had reached on a bunt single, and Sands into scoring position, Garcia punched a two-out single into the left center field gap to drive in both runners and give PLNU its first lead of the game. Nordgren would follow Garcia's hit with a double to complete the five-run rally.
The PLNU bullpen would take it from there.
Cole Chandler delivered a perfect eighth inning and then
Brett Carlile pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.
Sebastian Santos (1-0) also picked up the win out of the bullpen as he pitched two perfect innings of relief. It was the bullpen which really gave the Sea Lions the opportunity to comeback as it allowed just two base runners in four scoreless innings of work.
All three of the Flames runs came in the third inning when they were able to string together five singles.
Garcia, Harwick and Jervis each had two base knocks for PLNU. Daniel Juarez led BUC with two singles.
