Broncos score late to take series from Sea Lions

Box Score

POMONA, Calif. - This three-game series between Point Loma and Cal Poly Pomona proved that the Broncos do not quit until the final out. In the final game of the series on Monday (Feb. 3) CPP scored all seven of its runs after the sixth inning, including two in the bottom of the ninth, to comeback and defeat the Sea Lions 7-6.

Point Loma (0-3) jumped out to a 5-0 behind a strong start from freshman Kevin Lillicrop. Trey Hunt had two runs batted in during the early onslaught including an RBI-triple in the sixth inning.

CPP would cut the lead to 5-3 with two runs in the sixth. The Sea Lions picked up an unearned run in the seventh when Preston Sands scored followed an error by the shortstop to go back up 6-3.

Cal Poly Pomona continued to fight and pushed two more runs across the board in the eighth and threatened to score more before PLNU went to the bullpen for Brett Carlile who got out of a two-runners on situation with a grounder to second to help PLNU preserve a 6-5 lead.

Point Loma had a chance to put an insurance run or two on the board in the ninth inning after the first two batters of the inning singles but it had runners thrown out at third and at home.

Carlilie returned to the mound for the ninth inning but did not have the same good fortune as the Broncos sent the top of their order to the plate. Their leadoff hitter singled, and then after a pop up for the first out, Michael Johnson also singled to put runners on first and second with one out. Carlile then got a fly out to center field but the lead runner was able to advance to third on the play.

David Armendariz then knocked in the tying run on a single through the left side of the infield and the next batter Steven Andrade singled in the game-winning run with grounder up the middle.

Carlile (0-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing two runs in one inning pitched. RJ Shanks (1-0) earned the win I relief for CPP after throwing just one-third of an inning.

Clinton Harwick and Mike Marcoux each had two hits for Point Loma. Hunt led the team with two runs batted in. Armendariz had three RBI to lead the Broncos.

The Sea Lions' next games will be on the road at Cal State Monterey Bay. They will play a four-game series against the Otters starting on Friday, Feb. 7 at 2:00 p.m.
