SEASIDE, Calif. - The Sea Lions' baseball team just can't seem to ever be in a game that doesn't come down to the final inning and both Saturday's contests were no different. They fell in the opener to No. 18 Cal State Monterey Bay 5-4 before bouncing back to win the nightcap 3-2.
The win was the first of the season for Point Loma (1-5) and dropped the Otters to 3-4.
PLNU has now played 52 innings this season and has been leading in 32 of them. Also 49 of the 52 innings have been played the game Sea Lions either leading or down no more than three runs.
Game 1
Cal State Monterey Bay jumped on PLNU for four runs in the first two innings and then held on for 5-3 win.
The Otters got to the Sea Lions' pitching staff early with two runs in the first on a double by Blake Grant-Parks and then added two more in the second on an RBI-single and a sacrifice bunt for a run.
Point Loma cut the Otters' lead in half in the third inning as
Mike Marcoux tripled in
Tanner Handa and then scored on a sac fly by
Tyler Nordgren. Grant-Parks put the Otters' lead back up to three (5-2) in the bottom of the third with a solo homer.
The Sea Lions mounted a bit of a rally in the top of the ninth with two out. First
Lucas DiCiccio doubled and then
Clinton Harwick reached on an error. After
Preston Sands walked to load the bases Nordgren singled in a run to make the game 5-3 but the following batter grounded out to the pitcher to end the threat.
Nordgren went 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead PLNU.
Mike Marcoux also had a multi-hit game and Preston Sand walked in both his plate appearances. Grant-Parks and Brian Hamm each had three hits for the Otters.
Josh Eagle earned the win for CSUMB in the start. He went five innings allowing four hits and two runs. Rickey Guerrero picked up his first save of the year for the Otters.
Garrett Gooding took the loss for PLNU after giving up nine hits and five runs in five innings pitched.
Game 2
This time it was the Sea Lions that scored early and then held on for the win. PLNU scored three runs in the second inning and got great pitching performances from a pair of its freshmen to win game two 3-2.
Point Loma put three on the board in the second inning with the help of a pair of Otters' errors.
Lucas DiCiccio and
Tanner Handa started the inning off with back-to-back singles and then a passed ball allowed DiCiccio to score and Handa to advance to second base.
AJ Derr and
Tyler Hanzawa then each followed with singles to drive in Handa. An error by the Otters' shortstop on a grounder by
Jack Spohn capped off the scoring and give PLNU the 3-0 lead.
Cal State Monterey Bay would score single runs in the third and the fifth to cut the Sea Lions' lead to 3-2. Each time the Otters threatened to score more but PLNU starter
Kellen Sheppard (1-1) was able to limit the damage. He went the first six innings for the Sea Lions allowing five hits and two runs while striking out five and walking three.
Sheppard would hand the ball over to fellow freshman
Kevin Lillicrop in the seventh inning for the first save of his career. He allowed a hit and had a strikeout in the frame.
AJ Derr had two hits to lead the offense for PLNU. Matt Urakami and Mark Hurley each had two hits for the Otters which were outhit by the Sea Lions 7-6.
Jeff Owen (1-1) took the loss for CSUMB. He pitched five innings allowing six hits and three runs.
Next game
Point Loma will return home to host San Diego Christian for a single game on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 2:00 p.m.
