Vulcans take doubleheader from Sea Lions

HILO, Hawaii - The Vulcans' pitchers held the Sea Lions to just one run over 16 innings to spoil a pair of strong starts by Point Loma pitchers as Hawaii Hilo won both games Tuesday's doubleheader 2-0 and 4-1.

After coming into the week riding an eight-game winning streak, Point Loma has now dropped the first three games of the series to fall to 11-9 on the season and to 4-3 in the Pacific West Conference. Hawaii Hilo is now 5-6 on the season and 3-4 in the PacWest.

Game 1
Kevin Lillicrop (1-1) gave up just seven hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out three but it was not enough as four Hawaii Hilo pitchers combined to shutout the Sea Lions 2-0.

The Vulcans scored both their runs off Lillicrop in the seventh inning on RBI-singles by Byron Freitas and Austin Cusack.

Sheldon Shishido (1-0) earned the win in relief of Seamus Yoneshige who when the first 4.2 innings allowing two hits and two walks while striking out four. Shishido came into the game with two runners on and two out for the Sea Lions in the fifth and was able get Clinton Harwick to fly out to left field to end the inning. Michael Slifer picked up third save of the year with a scoreless ninth.

Five players had hits for PLNU including Tyler Nordgren who was 1-for-3 with a walk.

Game 2
Jordan Kurokawa (1-2) pitched a complete game giving up six hits and one run in seven innings to lift the Vulcans to a 4-1 win in the nightcap.

Kurokawa outdueled PLNU's Garrett Gooding (1-2) who went five innings allowing four hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out five. 

The Vulcans scored in the first inning but PLNU came back to tie the game in the fourth on an RBI-groundout by Kellen Sheppard to score Mike Marcoux in the fourth. UHH answered back in its half of the inning to take back a 2-1 lead on a two-out, RBI-single by Korin Medieros. The Vulcans would tack on insurance runs in the fifth and sixth to extend their lead to 4-1.

Mike Marcoux and Trey Hunt each had two hits for the Sea Lions. Marcoux also added two stolen bases. Kyle Watase also had two hits for Hawaii Hilo.

Next game
Point Loma will look to avoid the sweep tomorrow when it faces the Vulcans again in a single game tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. (PST).
