Timely hitting allows HPU take series from PLNU

HONOLULU - Hawaii Pacific won both games of the doubleheader over the Point Loma baseball team on Saturday (Mar. 15). The Sea Warriors won the opener 10-3 and the nightcap 6-4.

The decisions broke a tie for third place in the Pacific West Conference standings between PLNU and HPU. Hawaii Pacific is now alone is third place at 8-4 in the PacWest (14-6 overall). The Sea Lions (13-12, 6-6 PacWest) dropped back into a tie for fourth place with Fresno Pacific.

Game 1
Hawaii Pacific put up four runs in both the fourth and fifth innings and Kevin Lenik hit for the cycle in support of starter Joshua Garcia (1-0) who pitched seven to lead the Sea Warriors to a 10-3 win in the opening game of the doubleheader.

Lenik added three RBI in addition to his four hits for HPU which built a 10-1 lead after five innings. He doubled in the first, homered in the third and singled in the fifth. He completed the cycle by tripling to right center to lead off the bottom of the eighth.

Clinton Harwick reached base in all four of his plate appearances for the Sea Lions. He went 3-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Tyler Nordgren and Tyler Hanzawa added two hits apiece.

Sea Warriors' starting pitcher Joshua Garcia allowed nine hits and just two earned runs in his seven innings of work. He also walked three and struck out five. Kevin Lillicrop (1-2) was charged with the loss after allowing 10 runs in 4.1 innings.

Game 2
Hawaii Pacific scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 4-4 tie and earn 6-4 win and dash the Sea Lions' hopes of evening the series.

With one out in the bottom of the sixth the Sea Warriors had back-to-back hits to set the table for pinch hitter Ryan Torres-Torioka. Torres-Torioka did not make good contact but his soft grounder died on the infield allowing Codey Ellenwood to come in from third base with the winning run. Jordan Oshiro then singled to bring in an insurance run and extend HPU's lead to 6-4.

Jeremy Fujimoto (2-0), who came into the game in relief for starter Luke Laurita after the Sea Lions had scored two run in the fifth, finished out his own win with a scoreless seventh inning. Fujimoto gave up just two hits and no runs with two strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work.

Clinton Harwick led Point Loma with two hits, including a triple, and two runs scored. Tyler Nordgren concluded his fantastic series against HPU with two more RBI. In the four games Nordgren was 8-for-14 with two doubles, a home run, two runs scored and seven RBI.

Garrett Gooding (1-3) took the loss for Point Loma after being charged with all six runs in 5.1 innings.

Next games
Point Loma will step out of conference next week for a pair of games. PLNU will host Chapman on Wednesday, Mar.19 at 3:00 p.m. The Sea Lions will then go on the road to Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday, Mar. 22 for a single, nine-inning game at 2:00 p.m.
