SAN DIEGO - Matt Gandy hit a pair of two-run homers and Chapman rallied for three runs in the top of the 10th inning to hand Point Loma a 9-6 defeat in a non-conference contest on Wednesday, Mar. 19.
The loss evens the Sea Lions' season record at 13-13 on the season. The win moved Chapman to 13-8.
Each of Gandy's two homers over the right centerfield wall gave Chapman the lead. The first came in the fifth to put the Panthers on top 4-3 and then second came in the seventh to give them the 6-5 lead.
Point Loma rallied for a run in the seventh on a two-out single by
Matt Jervis to tie the game and send it to extras. In the 10th, Chapman loaded the bases with one out and then broke the tie with a suicide squeeze. They would add two more insurance runs in the inning to go up 9-6.
Taber Watson then pitched a scoreless bottom of the 10th to earn his second save of the season. Ben Vietze earned the win by throwing two scoreless innings of relief.
Brett Carlile (2-4) took the loss for PLNU.
Jervis and
Clinton Harwick each had three hits to lead PLNU. Jervis also knocked in two runs while
Kellen Sheppard,
Tyler Nordgren and Harwick each had one.
Point Loma will now travel to Cal State San Bernardino to face the Coyotes in a non-conference game on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
