Sea Lions drop series opener to Cal Baptist

Box Score

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Sea Lions ran into a hot pitcher on Thursday night as California Baptist's Trevor Oak's hurled a five-hit shutout to lead the Lancers to a 6-0 win over the Point Loma baseball team.

Oaks improved to 8-0 on the season while striking out five Sea Lions in his first complete game shutout of the season. Oaks helped CBU improve to 29-10 on the season and to 12-9 in the Pacific West Conference. The loss evens PLNU's record at 19-19 on the season (10-11 PacWest).

Mike Marcoux picked up two of the Sea Lions' five hits on the afternoon as he moved to the leadoff spot for the first time this season. Both his hits were infield singles, and all five of Point Loma's hits were singles.

Kellen Sheppard pitched better than the six earned runs on his line would indicate. He gave up 13 hits but just one walk while striking out five. He was able to get CBU to hit into five double plays to help reduce the damage.

Cal Baptist scored three in the second inning after the first four batters had singles and Andy Crowley capped off the scoring with a single through the right side. CBU would add another run in the fourth and two more in the seventh to build their 6-0 lead.

Tyler DeTrinidad was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Blair Moore also knocked in two runs, while Crowley and Zack Norris each had two hits.

The two teams will get back together for the second game of their four-game series on Friday night  starting at 6:00 p.m.
