Grand slam dooms PLNU in second game of CBU series

Box Score

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Stephen Lohr hit a grand slam and three different Lancers collected three-hit games to help California Baptist take the second game of the series from the Point Loma baseball team, 8-3, on Friday (Apr. 18).

The loss dropped PLNU (19-20, 10-12 PacWest) below .500 for the first since last February. Point Loma is now in fifth place in the PacWest standings, nine games behind conference-leader Dixie State and three back of Cal Baptist (30-10, 13-9 PacWest) for third place.

The Sea Lions took an early 1-0 lead in the fourth on back-to-back doubles by Clinton Harwick and Tyler Nordgren. This was the 15th double of the season for Nordgren who pulled within one of the conference leaders. However, that lead would be short lived as CBU would rally for three two-out runs in its half of the fourth.

Point Loma would cut the Lancers' lead in half at 3-2 with a run in the sixth when Matt Jervis grounded out to second to plate Harwick who had led off the inning with a single.

With their lead down to one, the Lancers rallied for five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Andrew Montoya knocked in the first run of the inning his second run of the game with on a single three batters into the inning and then came around to score on Lohr's grand slam. Seven of the Lancers' eight runs scored came with two outs.

Harwick, Nordgren and Mike Marcoux each had two hits to pace Point Loma. Harwick also scored two runs, and both he and Nordgren added a stolen base. This was the second straight night Marcoux has recorded a multi-hit game after being moved to the leadoff spot.

Montoya, Andy Crowley and Tyler DeTrinidad all had three hits apiece for CBU which outhit the Sea Lions 13-8.

Tyson Miller (4-1) earned the win in relief. He came into the game in the third inning and pitched the final seven innings allowing eight hits and three runs while walking five and striking out three. Kevin Lillicrop (1-4) took the loss for PLNU. He was charged with 11 hits and five runs in 5.2 innings pitched. He also struck out four while walking two.

These teams will get back together on Saturday, Apr. 19 to close out their four-game series with a doubleheader starting at Noon. This will be the Sea Lions' final regular season road games of the year.
