Late rallies help PLNU split doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 [Game 1 box score] [Game 2 box score]

SAN DIEGO - Point Loma fought back from deficits in the 9th and 11th innings in the nightcap of Friday's doubleheader to earn a split with Dixie State. The Sea Lions dropped the opener 5-1 before bouncing back to win game two 6-5 in 11 innings.

The Sea Lions handed Dixie State just its fifth loss in the Pacific West Conference this season. The Red Storm are now 30-14 on the season, and continue to lead in the PacWest standings by four games over Azusa Pacific with 21-5 conference mark. PLNU is 21-22 on the season and 12-14 in the conference.

Game 1
Dixie State's starter Chance Abrath held the Sea Lions one run over 6.2 innings and the Red Storm outhit PLNU 15-3 to earn a 5-1 win in Friday's opener.

Tyler Blair went 3-for-5 with two runs driven in to pace a DSC squad which had all nine starters recorded a hit, and five posted a multi-hit game.

Matt Jervis had two of the Sea Lions three hits. Anthony Torres drove in the lone run for PLNU on a bases loaded walk in the seventh.

Abrath improved to 6-1 with the victory. Kellen Sheppard took the loss to even his record at 4-4.

Game 2
Things were not looking good for Point Loma, trailing by two runs entering the bottom of the ninth inning against the top closer in the PacWest, but with their backs against the wall and facing the possibility of dropping both games of the doubleheader rallied to send the game to extra innings and win it in the 11th.

It was Mike Marcoux that came through with the two-out, game-tying double against the Red Storm's closer Evan Parker, who entered the weekend with a 0.96 ERA, to tie the game in the ninth. With two runners in scoring position, Marcoux battled through a seven-pitch at-bat before lacing a double into center field to score both runs and send the game into extra innings tied at 4-4.

Dixie State would be the first team to score in extras as Austin Bartleson hit a pinch hit home run in the top of the 11th to put DSC in front 5-4.

It would again be Marcoux that would come through with the big hit. Anthony Torres got things started with a leadoff single and after he was sacrificed to second, Marcoux doubled down the right field line to score Torres and knot the score at 5-5.

DSC then went back to its bullpen and brought in Matt Hill to face Clinton Harwick with the game on the line. The senior harwick would not take long to deliver the game-winning hit as he drove Hill's 1-1 offering into right field for a single to score Marcoux with the winning run.

Marcoux finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI. Harwick also collected three hits and two RBI. Kyle Desimone got the start in right field and connected on two doubles, the second of which started the Sea Lions' ninth inning rally.

Brett Carlile (4-5) earned the win in relief of Kevin Lillicrop. He pitched the final three innings allowing just the one run on the solo shot in the 11th. Lillicrop gave the Sea Lions a quality start as he pitched the first eight innings allowing eight hits and four runs while striking out eight and walking no one. Taylor Stone took the loss for Dixie State after he gave up the double to Marcoux.
