Freshmen pitchers dominate in Sea Lions' DH sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SAN DIEGO - It is senior weekend for the Point Loma baseball team, but it was a pair of freshmen pitchers that stole the spotlight on Friday as Kellen Sheppard and Kevin Lillicrop each pitched complete games to lead the Sea Lions to a doubleheader sweep of Academy of Art. PLNU won the opener 8-1 behind Sheppard and the nightcap 5-1 behind Lillicrop.

The wins bring PLNU to within one game of .500 for the season with a 23-24 record. The Sea Lions remain in sixth place in the PacWest standings with a 14-16 conference mark. The losses drop ART U to 11-35 on the season and to 6-24 in the PacWest.

Game 1
Kellen Sheppard pitched a complete game, allowing just five hits and one run, and Tyler Nordgren when 3-for-3 with a home run and four RBI to lift Point Loma to an 8-1 win in the opener.

The Sea Lions' offense jumped on the Urban Knights early with a pair of runs in the first and second innings and Sheppard would take it from there. He struck out six batters over the nine innings while setting down 14 straight Urban Knights between the fourth and ninth innings. This was his second career complete game.

The only blemish against Sheppard (5-4) came in the fourth inning when Jordan Thomas doubled in Dante Redhead to make the score 4-1. The Sea Lions would extend their lead back to four in the bottom of the inning on a single by Nordgren to drive in Mike Marcoux.

Nordgren would extend the Sea Lions' lead again in the sixth inning with a towering three-run homer to left field. This was his fifth home run of the season and his 10th multi-RBI game.

Clinton Harwick also had a great game. He went 4-for-5 at the plate with two RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Marcoux also had two steals to go along with his two hits and a team-leading three runs scored. Anthony Torres added a pair of base knocks. Redhead was the only Urban Knight to record a multi-hit game as PLNU outhit them 13-5.

Game 2
If possible, Kevin Lillicrop (2-4) was even better than Sheppard in the opener. He allowed just two hits and one run over the nine innings pitched while walking two and striking out six. He allowed a single in the fourth inning and did not allow another hit until a solo home run broke up his shutout bid in the ninth.

PLNU spotted Lillicrop a 2-0 lead to work with in the fifth on an RBI-single by Michael Randel and a sacrifice fly by Jack Spohn. After PLNU tacked on a run in the seventh on an RBI-groundout by Harwick, Randel gave the Sea Lions another insurance run with an RBI-single.

Randel and Matt Jervis each had three hits for Point Loma which outhit ART U 13-2. Randel finished the contest 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Jervis added a run scored to his line, while Kyle Desimone and Jack Spohn also recorded multi-hit games.
