Men's soccer falls to FPU in PacWest opener

Box Score

SAN DIEGO - Jorge Chedraui notched a hat-trick and Fresno Pacific scored four first-half goals to earn a 4-1 victory over the Point Loma men's soccer team in the Pacific West Conference opener for both squads on Saturday, Sept. 20.

The win moved Fresno Pacific to 3-1-0 (1-0-0 PacWest) on the season and dropped PLNU to 0-3-1.

Chedraui scored his hat-trick in a 30 minute span in the first half. The first goal came just 2:09 into the contest. He would add the others in the 25th minute off a free kick and the last in the 33rd minute on a steal in the Sea Lions' box. Chedraui is now tied for second in the PacWest with four goals on the season.

"We started poorly and they do great job taking advantage of poor starts," said PLNU head coach Phil Wolf. "It was 4-0 before we even turned around. It is a work in progress and the guys have to get better, grow up and learn from things like this."

PLNU would cut into the lead right before the half on Mitch Wheelon's second goal of the season. It was Christopher Tellez which got the attack started on the far side of the field. As he sprinted towards the baseline he passed the ball over to Eduardo Gallardo streaking down the seam of the defense whom one-touched the ball into the center of the 18-yard box to Wheelon who deposited into the net for the goal.

In the second half, PLNU matched FPU shot for shot but it was just too late to overcome the three-goal deficit.

"If you watched the whole of the game it is a pretty even game but quality for quality they take their chances and we don't; that is the story of the game right there," said Wolf. "Overall their quality won out."

The Sea Lions will now head on the road for almost a month before returning to the PLNU Soccer Field on Oct. 16th.  They will face Cal Poly Pomona and San Diego State in non-conference contests, along with conference foe Azusa Pacific. The Sea Lions will then travel to Hawaii for a seven-day, four-match road trip.
