Men's Basketball

PLNU Athletics Alumni Update - Nov. 4, 2015

Here is an update on a few Point Loma alumni that have continued their athletic careers beyond college, either playing or coaching. If you have other names to add to the list please contact PLNU Assistant Athletic Director for Communications Danny Barnts at dbarnts@pointloma.edu.
 
Kaohi Downing: baseball, 2006-09
Downing, who was recently with the Trois-Rivieres Eagles in Quebec, Canada, signed a professional contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Oct. 26, 2015. Downing has made some changes since his time at PLNU, most notably shifting to the mound where he took on a reliever's role and now throws 95 miles per hour out of the pen. Last season with Trois-Rivières, Downing made 30 trips to the mound, went 3-0 with 10 saves. The right-hander also submitted an ERA of 3.41 with 38 strikeouts in 31 innings of work. Kaohi Downing was a 50th round selection of San Francisco Giants in 2009. After playing two seasons with affiliates of the Giants, Downing played in the independent baseball for four years with Winnipeg, Sioux Falls, Lincoln and Trois Rivières. At present, we still do not know at what level affiliate Downing will report.
 
Taylor Wetherell: men's basketball, 2012-14
Wetherell has been playing for the STA Lucia Realtors in Manila, Philippines since 2014. Wetherell, who has dual citizenship in the Philippines, is playing the role of a pass-first point guard. He is averaging nearly 8.0 points and 4.0 assists per game. Last season, Wetherell helped lead STA Lucia Realtors to an undefeated record and the league championship, called the Republika Cup.  STA Lucia Realtors just opened its new season, which will continue for the next 10 months. Wetherell and the team recently returned from contests overseas in Dubai and Vietnam. STA Lucia is 3-2 this season and in third place in their league.

Crissa Jackson: women's basketball, 2010-12
Jackson recently signed with the Harlem Globetrotters, becoming the 13th female member to join the historic team. Jackson was one of four new players signed this season as the Globetrotters prepare for their much-anticipated world tour. Jackson was the only female out of the four signees to join this iconic team that has been providing smiles, sportsmanship and service to millions of people worldwide for over 90 years. Marek Klassen: men's basketball, 2010-15
Klassen did not play this last week, but his team CSU Sibiu (3-3) won 98-80 over Rovinari (1-4) and are tied for seventh in Liga Nationala Standings. Their next game is against Phoenix Galati (3-3) on November 7th. On the season, Marek averages 5.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.0 assists in four games.
 
Hayden Lescault: men's basketball, 2010-15
Lescault's squad, BG Karlsruhe (6-0), is undefeated on the season after earning a victory over Licher Basket (1-5) by a score of 92-83. Hayden led all scorers with his career high 25 points, shooting 9-of-14 from the floor and 6-of-8 from the free throw line. He also had three rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and a steal. Hayden now averages 12.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.6 assists in five games played. BG Karlsruhe's next game is against second place Ehingen (5-1) on November 7th.
 
Carlotta Kloppenburg: women's basketball, 2012-14
Kloppenburg was recently named the assistant women's basketball coach at Winthrop University. Last season, Kloppenburg served as a graduate assistant with the Eagles. She has also served internships in the WNBA with the Indiana Fever, the Los Angeles Sparks and the Tulsa Shock.
 
Colleen Planeta: women's basketball, 2006-10
After a two-year coaching stint back home at PLNU (2013-15), Planeta made her return to professional basketball in Australia with the Hume City Broncos. She was voted league MVP and also got the nod for the all-star team. She led the Broncos to first place in the Big V conference with an 18-2 league record and a 20-5 record overall. Planeta averaged a double-double 21.4 points and 10 rebounds per game, while also leading the league in blocks with 3.2 each game. She shot 47.8% from the floor, 38.9% from behind the arc, and 76.8% from the charity stripe.
 
BJ Foster: men's basketball, 1998-01
Foster is going into his third year as assistant coach for the Cal State University San Marcos Cougars where he has accumulated a 62-6 record. During his time as an assistant coach, Foster has totaled a 283-144 overall record as an assistant coach as well as eight postseason appearances. He assisted PLNU, Vanguard, BIOLA, and now CSUSM.
 
Greg Murray: men's basketball, 2008-12
Played one season of professional basketball at Hapoel Kiryat Tivon in Israel where he led the team averaging 18.3 points per game starting at small forward. He shot 58 percent from the floor, including 36 percent from 3-point range. He also averaged 1.1 steals and 6.3 rebounds per contest Since then, he has moved back to San Diego and currently works as a systems analyst for Sharp HealthCare.  He married former PLNU volleyball player Tabitha Heinken.
 
Sam Cyr: men's golf, 2006-09
Cyr has continued his professional golf career on the Asian Tour where he has played since 2009 when he turned pro. He has won the individual title at the Mid-Pacific Open (2010), the Hawaii State Open (2011) and the Maui Open (2011). Cyr's best year came in 2013 when he finished 42nd in the Asian Tour after 12 tournaments and coming second at the Mercuries Taiwan Master. So far in 2015, Cyr has played in two tournaments and placed in the top 50 in both, including a 25th place finish at the Bangladesh Open.
 
Jay Johnson: baseball, 1998-01
Johnson is just starting his first year with the University of Arizona baseball team after being named head coach on June 8, 2015 after two seasons at the helm of the University of Nevada. In two seasons at Nevada, Jay compiled a 72-42 record. In 2015, Jay led Nevada to a 41-15 record including the school's first ever Mountain-West title as well as leading the program to national rankings for the majority of the season, topping out at No. 19. He was named the Mountain-West Coach of the Year for 2015.
 
Matt Larimore: men's tennis, 2002
In a piece of sad news, the former men's tennis player Matt Larimore recently died of a heart attack in October. He was working in the yard and felt chest pains, before calling 911, but it was too late. He lasted a week on life support but eventually passed away. His funeral was Oct. 25.
