A look at the Sea LionsThe Point Loma men's basketball team is 7-7 on the season and sits in 10th place in the PacWest standings with a 3-5 record. Surprisingly the Sea Lions have struggled at home this season where they are just 3-4 and 1-3 in PacWest play, after going 23-8 at home the previous two seasons.
PLNU leads the PacWest in field goal percentage (.495) and 3-point percentage (.402), and are tied for second in assists (16.71). That field goal percentage has PLNU ranked 22nd in the country. As a team, Point Loma is averaging 77.3 points per game.
Sam Okhotin has taken over the team's scoring lead with 15.6 ppg to rank 10th in the PacWest. The senior forward is also third in the PacWest and 40th in the country with a .443 3-point shooting percentage.
Josh Rodriguez is right on Okhotin's heels with 15.4 ppg. He ranks 11th in the PacWest in scoring. The freshman point guard is also leading the league and sixth in the NCAA with 6.8 assists per game.
Tanner Lancona averages 12.9 ppg and is the team's leading rebounder with 6.3 boards per game. He is also third in the PacWest with a .577 shooting percentage and second in 3-point percentage (.474).
Judd Welfringer is also in double-figures with 10.4 ppg, while averaging 5.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists. The Sea Lions' other starter,
Mike Planeta, is just off the pace with 9.1 points per game.

Rodriguez grabs another PacWest Freshman of the Week honorJosh Rodriguez is back at it again. The point guard from the PLNU men's basketball team collected his fifth PacWest Conference Freshman of the Week award after averaging 11.0 points, 5.7 rebounds and 7.3 assists per game last week (Jan. 4-10). The native of La Habra, Calif. (Sonora HS), matched his career-high with 10 assists and had a career-best nine rebounds against Notre Dame de Namur. He scored 15 points, shooting 8-for-8 from the free throw line, against Academy of Art while helping PLNU pick up a pair of road victories.
A look at the HawksHoly Names is 3-13 this season and 2-6 in the PacWest. The Hawks have lost three straight games and are 0-8 on the road this year. Holy Names is averaging 69.3 ppg and are allowing 78.8 ppg. Josh Crum leads the PacWest with 19.3 ppg. He is shooting .455 percent from the field, .750 percent at the free throw line and also averaging 4.9 assists. Dante Robinson (13.8 ppg) is also averaging double-figures for HNU. Zac Young leads the team with 6.9 rebounds per game.
A look at the Red StormDixie State is 7-6 this season and is tied for seventh in the PacWest standings with a 4-3 record. The Red Storm has won two PacWest games in a row, and three of their past four. DSU is averaging 74.0 ppg and is shooting .426 percent from the field. Dixie State dominates the boards, outrebounding its opponents by 7.8 per game as they average 40.5 caroms per contest. Trevor Hill leads the team and ranks third in the PacWest with 17.2 ppg. Mark Odgen Jr. is tied for the league-lead with 9.8 rebounds, including 3.5 per game on the offensive glass. He is nearly averaging a double-double as he also posts 12.5 ppg. Mason Sawyer (10.9) and Brandon Simister (10.9) are also averaging double-figures for DSU.
Military Night Returns on Saturday, Jan. 30PLNU Athletics will host its second Military Night of the year on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 2:00 p.m. The Sea Lions will be honoring all former and active military members, and their admission to the game is free. The 500 fans in attendance also will received a free PLNU camo logo t-shirt which will be used as part of the in-game recognition.
Westphal recognition night set for Feb. 3Coach
Bill Westphal has been at the helm of the PLNU women's basketball team for the past 17 years, and prior to the season he announced this would be his last year on the bench. Join us on Feb. 3 as PLNU Athletics pays tribute to coach Westphal with a ceremony prior to the game.
