A look at the Sea LionsThe Point Loma men's basketball team is 5-5 this season and 1-3 in the PacWest. PLNU opened PacWest play by defeating APU, 92-86, in overtime, but have since dropped their last three. The Sea Lions are averaging 78.9 points per game and are outshooting their opponents from the field .508 percent to .438 percent. PLNU is also outshooting their opponents at the charity stripe (.774 to .694) and from behind the arc (.420 to .351). Freshman
Josh Rodriguez is leading PLNU and ranked fifth in the PacWest with 17.2 points per game. He is pacing the PacWest and is ranked 14th in the NCAA with 6.6 assists per game. He is also third in the PacWest with 2.2 steals per game. The Sea Lions are also getting double-digit scoring averages from
Sam Okhotin (13.6),
Tanner Lancona (13.4) and
Judd Welfringer (11.2). The Sea Lions' other starter,
Mike Planeta, is just off the pace with 9.5 points per game.
Rodriguez makes run on PacWest Freshman of the Week honorsJosh Rodriguez has been named the PacWest Freshman of the Week in four of the first five weeks the honor was given, including three straight from Nov. 30-Dec. 14. The La Habra, Calif., native earned his latest honor by posting a double-double with a career-high 24 points and 10 assists against Concordia (CA).
A look at the ArgonautsNotre Dame de Namur is 1-9 this season and is winless in PacWest play (0-3). The Argonauts opened their season with nine straight losses before finally getting in the win column with a victory over Pacific Union on Dec. 31. No NDNU student-athlete averages in double-figures in scoring. Korey Serna paces the team with 9.8 ppg and 5.9 rebounds. He is followed in points by Jalen Young and Tre'shawn King-Dunbar with 8.6 and 8.4 ppg, respectively. As a team, NDNU is averaging 50.7 ppg and is shooting .364 percent from the field.
A look at the Urban KnightsAcademy of Art is 4-6 on the season, 2-2 in the PacWest and 1-3 at home. Chris Salas is leading the team with 13.5 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. He is shooting .465 percent from the field and .432 percent from 3-point distance. Jase Harrison is also in double-figures with 12.9 ppg. He is leading the team with a .467 shooting percentage and a .857 free throw percentage. As a team, ARTU is averaging 66.2 ppg and is shooting .423 percent from the field.
A look at the VulcansHawaii Hilo is still in search of its first victory of the 2015-16 season. The Vulcans are 0-7 this season and 0-3 in the PacWest. They, along with NDNU, are the only squad in the PacWest without a conference win. Parker Farris is averaging 17.7 points per game to pace six Vulcans in double-figures. Patrick Ball (13.0), Jordan Russell (11.7), Nate Walker (11.0), Vandyon Lockett (10.7) and Chris Holmes (10.3) are all averaging at least 10 points per game for UHH. As a team, Hawaii Hilo is averaging 79 ppg and are shooting .449 percent from the field.
Youth Day this Saturday (Jan. 9)For the second time this basketball season, and fifth time during the 2015-16 academic year, the Point Loma Athletic Department will be hosting a Youth Day.
