Critical 5-game home stretch begins for Point Loma

The next two weeks
This is the start of the final stretch of the regular season for the Point Loma men's basketball team (10-8, 6-5 PacWest), which is currently holding onto the final spot in the six-team PacWest Conference Tournament. The Sea Lions have nine games left on their schedule, and the next five will be at home. PLNU will host Academy of Art to open the homestand on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 4 p.m. Point Loma will then host Notre Dame de Namur (Jan. 30), Chaminade (Feb. 2) and Hawaii Hilo (Feb. 4) over the next eight days before closing out their home season with Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 9 against Azusa Pacific.

A look at the Sea Lions
The Point Loma men's basketball team is 10-8 on the season and in sixth place in the PacWest at 6-5. The Sea Lions have dropped their last two games after winning their previous five. PLNU is 5-2 at home this season. The Sea Lions have also played many close games this season under first-year head coach Ryan Looney. Thirteen of PLNU's 18 games have been decided by eight points or less (6-7).
 
Sophomore Josh Rodriguez continues to lead the Sea Lions in scoring (16.6) and the PacWest in assists (5.6). His 5.6 assists per game rank him 25th in NCAA Division II. He has hit double-figures in 16 of 18 games this season. He also averages 1.44 steals (11th PacWest) and 4.2 rebounds. Vince Boumann joins Rodriguez in double-figures with 13.4 ppg. He is leading the PacWest with 8.8 rebounds per game and is second in field goal percentage (63.0%).
 
As a team, Point Loma is averaging 76.1 ppg and shooting 45.4 percent. The Sea Lions are third in the PacWest in rebounding margin (6.1) and lead the league in offensive rebounds per game (12.7). PLNU's 8.7 3-pointers made per game rank fourth in the PacWest and it is third in fewest turnovers (119).
 
A look at the Urban Knights
Academy of Art is 5-12 on the season and 4-7 in the PacWest. The Urban Knights snapped a five-game slide in their last contest with a 57-52 victory over Fresno Pacific. ART features a balanced offensive attack with six student-athletes averaging over 8.5 ppg but none over 10.5 ppg. Chris Salas is the team's leading scorer (10.5) and rebounder (6.1). As a team, Academy of Art is averaging 67.4 ppg and allowing 73.7 ppg. It is hitting 40.5 percent of its shots from the field and is being outrebounded by 6.1 boards per game.
 
A look at the Argonauts
Notre Dame de Namur is 4-13 on the season and in 13th place in the PacWest standings (2-9). The Argonauts just snapped a six-game losing streak with a two-point win at Academy of Art (54-52). Tre'Shawn King-Dunbar leads NDNU with 14.6 ppg and 3.7 apg. Lance Page is also in double-figures with 11.5 ppg. Korey Serna (9.6 ppg), Brian Ying (9.2 ppg) and Michael Karimu (8.2 ppg) are also providing quality scoring for the Arguonauts. As a team, NDNU is at the bottom of the PacWest in scoring at 64.1 ppg and are being outrebounded by 3.5 caroms per game.
 
A look at the Silverswords
Chaminade is fourth in the PacWest standings at 9-4 (13-7 overall). The Silverswords have won two straight and four of their last five. Chaminade is third in the PacWest in scoring at 85.2 ppg and lead the league with 9.7 made 3-pointers per game. CUI is shooting 48.2 percent from the field and 37.6 percent from 3-point range. Rohndell Goodwin (21.3 ppg) leads five student-athletes averaging double-figures. He is shooting 48.1 percent from the field and 42.5 percent from behind the arch, and is third in the PacWest in scoring. Kiran Shastri is sixth in the PacWest in scoring at 17.3 ppg and paces the PacWest in made 3-pointers per game (3.6).
 
A look at the Vulcans
Hawaii Hilo is 6-10 on the season and 4-6 in the PacWest. The Vulcans have lost two straight and four of their last five. They are fourth in the PacWest in scoring (79.3) but are also 13th in points allowed (81.2). Parker Farris is second in the PacWest in scoring with 23.3 ppg. Brian Ishola is fourth in the PacWest in rebounding (8.3) and also ranks 10th in scoring (15.6). Darius Johnson-Wilson (11.0 ppg) and Ryley Callaghan (10.1) are also in double-figures. Callaghan leads the team with 3.8 assists per game.
 
A look at the Cougars
Azusa Pacific is right behind PLNU in the PacWest standings at 5-6 (10-11 overall). Petar Kutlesic leads the Cougars with 14.9 ppg and 8.4 rpg. He is shooting 49.3 percent from the field. Joey Schreiber (14.0 ppg) and Corey Langerveld (11.7 ppg) are also in double-figures for the Cougars which average 75.8 points per game as a team.
 
Next games
After Point Loma closes out its homestand, it will head on the road to complete its regular season schedule. The Sea Lions will travel to Hawaii for three matches between Feb. 16-20. PLNU will return to the mainland to close out the season on the road on a Fox Sports One televised game at No. 4 California Baptist on Feb. 25.
