SAN DIEGO - Many wounded warriors struggle with the transition back into civilian life after combat, and inclusion in collegiate sporting events is more than just a way for veterans to feel appreciated and honored for their sacrifices. It provides opportunities to be reintroduced to the unique bonds experienced during military service. Rarely duplicated in the civilian world, these relationships act as a secure bedrock that paves the road to recovery. Point Loma Athletics
is rallying behind our nation's heroes during their games against Cal State East Bay (women) and UC San Diego (men) at Golden Gym in San Diego on Nov. 14.
Â
"This is a great opportunity for Point Loma Athletics to reach out to members of the military in our local community," said Point Loma Athletic Director
Ethan Hamilton. "The military and the veterans are such an important part of the fabric of San Diego. We are very proud that our student-athletes and the athletic department are able again this year to honor members Wounded Warrior Project for all they have sacrificed for our country."
Â
In collaboration with
Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP), Point Loma Athletics has invited local warriors served by WWP to be part of a pregame ceremony on the court where members of both teams can show appreciation for all their service. Â
Â
More than 48,000 service members have been physically wounded during the military conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. An estimated 400,000 more are living with the invisible wounds of war, including post-traumatic stress disorder, major depression, and traumatic brain injury.
Â
That's why WWP connects warriors with one another, their families, and communities, and with life-changing programs and services. It serves warriors with programs targeting mental and physical health, career and benefits counseling, and support for the most severely wounded. And WWP empowers warriors to mentor other veterans and live life on their terms.
