Critical four-game series starts tomorrow

This week
The Point Loma baseball team will host California Baptist in a four-game series beginning on Thursday, Mar. 30. The Sea Lions will play single nine-inning games on Thursday and Friday starting at 3 p.m. The series will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 1 starting at Noon. These teams are currently third and fourth in the PacWest standings.

A look at the Sea Lions
Point Loma is 16-8 on the season and in fourth place in the PacWest (8-4). The Sea Lions rattled off 13 straight wins to begin the season at 16-3, but have now lost five in a row. Harrison Ramey leads the team with a .362 batting average. He is also tied with Ryan Garcia for the team-lead with 18 runs batted in. Garcia is pacing the PacWest with 19 walks, and is seventh with a .489 on-base percentage. Kellen Sheppard leads the club with 30 hits. He has 10 doubles and is tied for second in the PacWest. Four Sea Lions are hitting over .300, and six have an on-base percentage over .380. As a team, PLNU is hitting .280 (fifth PacWest) and has a .364 on-base percentage (fifth PacWest).
 
On the mound, PLNU ranks fourth in the PacWest with a 3.99 team earned run average. The staff is 13th in NCAA Division II with just 2.6 walks allowed per game and their strikeout-to-walk ratio of 2.68-to-1 ranks 33rd in the country. Stephen Young has statistically been the Sea Lions' best pitcher this season. He is third in the PacWest with a 1.71 earned run average and second with a 0.88 WHIP. He is allowing just 5.14 hits per nine innings and right handed opponents are just 16-of-116 (.138 average) off him. Kellen Sheppard (5-1) is tied for third in the PacWest with five wins. He has walked just three batters this season while striking out 34 to rank ninth in the NCAA with a 11.33 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
 
PLNU picks up votes in the polls
Thanks to their 13-game winning streak, the Point Loma baseball team climbed up to No. 20 in Collegiate Baseball's rankings for the week of Mar. 20. PLNU was tied for 25th in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) NCAA Division II poll and as high as No. 5 in the west region.
 
A look at the Lancers
California Baptist is coming off a road series in which it took three of four from Academy of Art to improve to 20-10 on the season, and move into third place in the PacWest standings (11-5). Three of CBU's five PacWest losses came at home against Dixie State. Tommy Bell is leading the team in hitting (.490) and home runs (five). Bryce Macy is hitting .345 with a team-leading 20 RBI. These are two of the five Lancers hitting over .300. As a team, CBU hits .291. Pitcher Garett King is coming of ABCA National Pitcher of the Week honors after throwing the program's first no-hitter. He went the complete game against Academy of Art, striking out 15 and facing the minimum of 27 batters. As a team, CBU is sixth in the PacWest with a 4.13 ERA and lead the league with 235 strikeouts.
 
Next games

Point Loma will be home again next Friday to host Concordia. The teams will play a split series, with Friday's doubleheader happening at PLNU and Saturday's doubleheader at Concordia. The games will begin at Noon on both days.
